Spean Bridge: Walking Trails, Clan History and Hotels
Accommodation in Spean Bridge
Spean Bridge is a destination for visitors looking to include walking and history in their plans. The Great Glen Way passes through the village; there are also other trails with their own routes and named destinations. Historical themes range from the history of Clan Cameron to the Commando Memorial and an 18th-century bridge. Glen Spean Brewing Co. is also based in Spean Bridge. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether a multi-day walk, a visit to historic sites or an interest in local beer production will be the focus of your stay.
Walking around Spean Bridge
The Great Glen Way is a waymarked long-distance walking trail from Fort William to Inverness. It is 75 miles, or 120 kilometres, long in total and passes through Spean Bridge. It can be walked in four to seven days. This makes it possible to plan the trail as a multi-day part of your trip, coordinating your stay with your hotel plans.
The East Highland Way passes through Leanachan Forest and continues to Spean Bridge. Leanachan Forest has cycling and walking trails. The trail network at Killiechonate Forest includes a new path connecting the forest with Spean Bridge. Unpaved routes run from Torlundy on the outskirts of Fort William to Spean Bridge. For a walking trip with a clear overall distance and duration, the Great Glen Way offers a different planning framework from trails through forests or along unpaved routes. Before setting out, check the current conditions of the Killiechonate trails and unpaved routes, as detailed trail conditions may change.
History from Clan Cameron to Highbridge
The Clan Cameron Museum is located in Achnacarry, Spean Bridge. It presents the history of Clan Cameron from its early beginnings to the present day. From 1942 to 1945, Achnacarry House was home to the Allied forces' Commando Training Depot.
The Commando Memorial stands near Spean Bridge on a rise above the village and the Great Glen. It is of national and international significance. The area around the memorial was used for Commando training during the Second World War. The site is therefore connected with the history of Allied Commando training.
Spean Bridge railway station also offers a glimpse of architectural history: the railway building was designed by James Miller and is influenced by the Swiss chalet style. To the west of the village are the remains of Highbridge, built by General Wade in 1736. The historical span thus runs from the 18th-century Highbridge, through its military use during the Second World War, to the history of Clan Cameron, which the museum documents up to the present day.
Beer from Spean Bridge
Glen Spean Brewing Co. makes beer in a historic farm building dating from the mid-19th century in the village of Spean Bridge. The brewery has a cellar-door shop on site. It sells the brewery's beers, merchandise, selected wines and local Highland spirits. If you are interested in regional drinks, this place combines beer production in a historic building with a shop whose selection extends beyond its own beers.
Find hotels for your stay
A clear travel plan can help you choose a hotel stay: first decide whether you need accommodation for a multi-day walk or for visits to individual sites. If you are walking the Great Glen Way, you can factor its four-to-seven-day duration into your stay plans. If you want to combine several interests, decide how long you would like to stay and what your priorities are before comparing hotel offers.
