Dornoch: History, Golf and Beach
Accommodation in Dornoch
There are several themes to consider when planning a trip to Dornoch: the history of the cathedral, a walk with information panels, golf, the beach and nature watching. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to decide what you’d like to focus on first. The following places and historical dates provide context for whether your interests lie more in the town’s history, its golfing tradition, or its beaches and nature.
Dornoch’s Culture and History
The history of Dornoch Cathedral is linked to the relocation of the bishop’s seat: Gilbert de Moravia moved the seat of the Diocese of Caithness to Dornoch and then had the cathedral built at his own expense. In 1570, it was set on fire during a clan feud between the Murrays of Dornoch and the Mackays of Strathnaver. Sir Robert Gordon partially restored it in 1616. Its relocation, construction, destruction by fire and partial restoration thus mark several distinct stages in its history. Dornoch Cathedral is also listed as a Category A listed building.
Dornoch town centre is also home to the Mercat Cross, a monument dating from the Middle Ages or early modern period. It offers a different historical reference point from the cathedral, with its designation as a monument and central location taking precedence. The Historylinks Heritage Hub explores another part of the area’s history. It features a reconstructed Highland Railway carriage and films about the Dornoch Light Railway. Railway history is thus presented in two formats: through a reconstructed carriage and through films.
Town History on Foot and Nature Watching
The Historylinks Trail is a level circular walk through Dornoch’s history. It starts at the Historylinks Museum and includes 15 information panels around the town. This sets the trail apart from individual historical landmarks such as the cathedral or Mercat Cross: the panels are spread across several stops along the walk. If you’d rather explore Dornoch’s history along a route than through a single monument, this walk provides a practical way to do so.
Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve lies between Dornoch and Golspie. A 1-kilometre footpath leads from the Balblair Wood car park to the wildlife viewing hide. This gives you two clearly different routes to consider: the walk around Dornoch with its 15 information panels, and the path from the car park mentioned above to the viewing hide. The footpath to the hide is one kilometre long.
Dornoch also has a Blue Flag beach. As this recognition can change from season to season, it’s best to check its status for the period of your trip.
Golf History in Dornoch
Two historical dates also help put Dornoch’s golf connections in context. The earliest surviving written evidence of golf on the Dornoch Links dates from 1616; Royal Dornoch Golf Club was founded in 1877. The dates refer to different things: 1616 marks early written references to golf on the Dornoch Links, while 1877 marks the club’s foundation. This places the documented history of golf before the club’s foundation, without conflating the two dates.
