In Larbert, natural and wetland landscapes meet ecclesiastical and industrial history. This offers different themes to consider when planning your stay: woodland paths and water, or historic buildings and routes. Each place has its own distinct character.

Nature Between Woodland and Wetlands

Carron Dams Local Nature Reserve is a partially drained reservoir with rich lowland mire communities and scrubland. The area is surrounded by mature broadleaf woodland. Wetland habitats and scrubland shape the landscape here as much as the trees do.

Larbert Woods has three easy trails that wind among mature trees and circle a picturesque small lake. Here, the focus is on a woodland walk beside the water; at the nature reserve, lowland mire and scrubland are important parts of the landscape’s character. This is how Larbert’s two nature destinations differ, even though both feature woodland and water.

The southeastern corner of Larbert Woods is a 15-minute walk from Larbert railway station. If you plan to walk this route on arrival, check the route before travelling, as footpaths can change.

At the Larbert – River Carron site, a paved path leads through a pedestrian gate to the weir. There are benches and steps leading to a closer viewpoint. This is a distinctive vantage point by the river. Check local path conditions before your visit.

Heritage Along Different Routes

Foundry Fortune is a community project that celebrates heritage and encourages exploration. Six waymarker sculptures form an informal circular route around Larbert Old Parish Church, the Lade, Carron Dams Local Nature Reserve, and the old clock tower of the Carron Company office on Stenhouse Road. The route thus takes in several named landmarks.

The Carron Dams Heritage Trail has a different historical focus. It runs around the historic site of Carron Ironworks and through the area where the village of West Carron once stood. The distinction can help you choose between the routes: Foundry Fortune loops around several named landmarks, while the Carron Dams Heritage Trail focuses on the former ironworks site and the area of the former village.

Churches and History

The religious history of the area around Larbert dates back at least to the early 12th century. The present-day Larbert Old Parish Church was designed by David Hamilton and built in 1820. In this way, the area’s long religious history and a church building with a specific date come together in different ways.

Larbert Cross Church is also a point of interest for visitors: it welcomes guests to its church and community. Together with the Old Parish Church, it offers another perspective on Larbert’s ecclesiastical history and present day.
