Castle Douglas offers several ways to plan a stay: a walking route through the town, a scenic circuit around Carlingwark Loch, art and local history, and local markets and events. As you plan your trip, you can choose what to focus on based on what you want to do in Castle Douglas.

Walks in the town and by the loch

The Castle Douglas Town Trail is a 2.5 km circular route, and you should allow about an hour to complete it. It follows pavements alongside the road and is a leisurely walk through the town, passing places of particular interest. Its length and approximate duration give you a clear idea of what to expect from this walk. As a town route, it focuses on Castle Douglas itself; the route around Carlingwark Loch, by contrast, focuses on the landscape. If you are looking for a walk in town, the Town Trail combines a circular route with the town’s sights.

The Carlingwark Loch Circular Trail is a 3.5-mile circular route around the loch and through farmland. It passes through an area designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its wildlife, as well as over a boardwalk through the wetland. The boardwalk is a breeding area for songbirds. The route therefore focuses on the landscape, wetland and birdlife. Unlike the Town Trail, it is not the town’s sights that take centre stage, but the loch, the surrounding farmland and the boardwalk. Both are circular routes, but their described surroundings make them suited to different interests.

Local history, art and market traditions

The town’s history can be explored through several clearly dated themes. Castle Douglas Town Hall was built in 1862. The present clock tower was donated in May 1935 by Henry J. Hewat of Paterson, New Jersey, USA. The former railway line from Stranraer to Dumfries ran through Castle Douglas from 1861 to 1965.

Castle Douglas Art Gallery first opened in 1938 and hosts exhibitions of contemporary art and craft. Castle Douglas has also had a livestock market since 1819. Together, these themes offer ways to explore everything from public architecture and transport history to art and market traditions. If you enjoy looking at different aspects of a place, these historical and cultural themes sit well alongside one another.

Local markets and events

The local producers’ market is held on the third Sunday of each month from February to October at Market Hill. Market dates can change, so check the specific date if you are planning your visit around it. The Castle Douglas Food and Bike Festival features events about food, drink and cycling; individual dates may vary. Castle Douglas also hosts the Douglas-Day parade, with decorated floats and people in costume. When planning, it is worth noting the difference: the market follows a third-Sunday schedule, while individual festival dates may vary.
