Kilbirnie brings together walking routes, water sports and a layered local history. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different routes and water-based activities as well as the town’s historical themes. Lochshore is near Kilbirnie and includes Kilbirnie Loch; other details refer to the routes, facilities or places named in each case.

Routes and getting around

A route for active travel connects Lochshore Park with the NCN7 cycle route. The North Ayrshire Core Path Plan also lists the Woodgreen–Kilbirnie section of NCN7 as a 14.5-kilometre road section of the National Cycle Network. These details describe different route connections: the park’s link to the cycle route and the designated section between Woodgreen and Kilbirnie.

The Moorpark Loop is a 1.5-kilometre route along roads and paths. In terms of length, it is considerably shorter than the 14.5-kilometre road section; its surface is also described differently. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between a shorter route along roads and paths and the longer section of the cycle network, without treating the two routes as the same.

There are also useful landmarks for visitors at Lochshore Park. Lochshore Park Hub opened in 2022 and can be booked by members of the public and community groups. A playground at Lochshore Park is right next to the Garnock Visitor and Community Hub. The two facilities have different names, making them clear landmarks within the park.

Water and activities at Kilbirnie Loch

Canoeing is one of the sporting activities at Kilbirnie Loch. Access for canoeing is generally at the northern end of the loch, via a path created by Garnock Canoe Club. If you are interested in this activity, this location provides a specific starting point for planning.

Kyle Waterski and Wakeboard offers slalom skiing, recreational skiing and wakeboarding at Kilbirnie Loch. The club welcomes visitors, individuals and groups at all training sessions and provides equipment, tuition and coaching for all ability levels. If you would like to include a training session in your trip plans, check the specific date with the club in advance.

You can watch birds and other wildlife by the River Garnock in the Kilbirnie area. This connection with nature complements the water sports available at the loch, but relates to the wider area along the river. The specific locations help you distinguish between activities at the loch and wildlife watching by the River Garnock when considering different interests for your stay.

History and townscape

Kilbirnie Castle or Place was a rectangular tower house dating from the late 15th century. It was destroyed by fire in 1757. Its history therefore spans from the construction of the tower house to its destruction. Kilbirnie is also designated as a Conservation Area. The complex building history of Kilbirnie Auld Kirk and Cemetery Walls spans the period from 1470 to the 20th century.

The town’s history goes back further: in the 6th century, Saint Brendan founded a Christian site in Kilbirnie. The name Kilbirnie derives from Cill Bhraonaigh or cille Brendan. Later, flax processing and weaving developed before the iron and steel industries took a leading role in the 19th and early 20th centuries. W & J Knox was founded in Kilbirnie as a textile mill; locally grown flax was processed there into fibres and linen yarn was produced.

The town’s architectural history also has named points of interest: James Houston from Kilbirnie designed the Radio City Cinema. The GV Step Forward Heritage Trail passes the former Kilbirnie railway station at waypoint 8. The history of Kilbirnie Place Golf Club includes the opening of nine additional holes in 1977. These details link different aspects of the town without conflating historical events with present-day visitor opportunities.
