Kames combines beautiful coastal views with routes across the Ardlamont Peninsula and historic details in the village.

Coastal Roads and Scenery

The Kyles 10 Miles route follows a quiet coastal road around the Ardlamont Peninsula on Argyll’s Secret Coast. Its first mile runs along the shore, passes the shinty pitch, home of Kyles Athletic, and reaches Kames. This gives you several specific landmarks to help you find your way: the route’s coastal-road character, the stretch along the shore, the pitch and Kames as the destination of the first mile.

A scenic drive south across the Ardlamont Peninsula offers panoramic views and secluded beaches. The route descriptions have different points of focus: Kyles 10 Miles goes around the peninsula, while the drive south crosses it. This makes it easy to distinguish the two scenic perspectives by the routes they follow.

Historic Routes and Village Details

The “Walking Through History” trail includes a section from Tighnabruaich through Auchenlochan to Kames and around the Ardlamont Peninsula to Millhouse. Kames is therefore part of a longer route that continues beyond the village. If you are interested in routes with a historical connection, you can place the village within this sequence of named stops.

A pair of standing stones in Kames offers a view of the Kyles of Bute. At the crossroads in Kames, one of three standing stones stands in an enclosure beside the war memorial. The two details point to different landmarks: the pair is associated with the view of the Kyles, while the single stone is identified by its location at the crossroads beside the memorial.

Kames Hotel and Local Produce

Kames Hotel is housed in a carefully restored building dating from the late Georgian or early Victorian period. The hotel is right on the water and offers views of the Kyles of Bute. The building’s historical period and its described location are specific features to consider when looking for a hotel in Kames.

Guests of Kames Hotel can use 15 berths in front of the hotel free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. If this option matters for your plans, bear in mind that berths are allocated in order of arrival rather than assuming a space is reserved for you.

The local food offering is also connected to producers from the surrounding area. The Kyles Allotment Group holds producers’ markets throughout the year in Kames Village Hall. Locally produced food is sold there, and visitors can meet the producers. Kames Hotel’s restaurant sources fresh produce from local suppliers. The market and restaurant offer different ways to connect with local food: at the market, you can meet producers; at the restaurant, the local connection is the source of the fresh produce.
