Whitehills and the Marina

Whitehills Marina belongs to the village and lies on the coast of the Moray Firth in north-east Scotland. Whitehills is home to a modern marina with numerous yachts and leisure boats. Together with the walking trails and maritime memorabilia, it shapes the themes through which the village can be explored. Depending on whether you are interested in the harbour, the coast or local history, you will find different starting points for your stay.

At the pontoons, the marina has 40 equipped and 7 unequipped berths; these figures may change. Visitor berths are available in the outer basin at a 56-metre-long pontoon. Facilities include an access bridge, lighting, electricity connections and drinking water. Check the facilities before setting out.

Maritime History

Trinity Church displays a handbell dated 1727 and inscribed “The Town of Whitehills”. A plaque also displayed there, dated 1860, commemorates the establishment of a lifeboat in Whitehills. A lifeboat station was moved to Whitehills in 1923. Thus, 1860 is the date of the plaque, while 1923 marks the relocation of the station. The bell bears the name of the village, while the plaque and the station’s relocation point to different aspects of lifeboat history. The Whitehills Harbour Heritage Centre is also in Whitehills. Check visiting arrangements before planning a visit.

Whitehills parish church was rebuilt stone by stone from nearby Banff. This building history gives local history a different focus from the maritime references: here, the focus is on the church’s reconstruction from Banff.

Walking Trails and Surroundings

Whitehills Town Trail offers scenic walking opportunities. Scenic paths also run along the Whitehills foreshore towards Banff Links. The Banff and Whitehills Circuit returns to Whitehills after a beach section and a rocky coastline known for its seabirds and seals. The choice of route therefore depends on the surroundings: the Town Trail, the foreshore towards Banff Links, or the circuit with its beach and rocky coastline. Check current path conditions before setting out.
