Lumphanan offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: Peel Ring, a significant earthwork castle; trails with views of the village and the Cairngorms; and golf. Historical records of the ring range from the earliest record in the 13th century to a probable episode in 1296. For your planning, the route from the village to the ring and the golf club’s visitor rules are also relevant.

Peel Ring: Earthwork Castle and History

Peel Ring of Lumphanan is a well-preserved example of an earthwork castle with outer defences that were once water-filled, and is of national importance. Its large earth bank is surrounded by a former water-filled ditch. Together, the bank and ditch define the shape of the site. Describing it as an earthwork castle draws attention to this landform: the fortification is characterised by the earth bank and the former ditch.

There are castle remains at Peel Ring; their earliest record dates to the 13th century. This century marks the earliest recorded date, not necessarily the year the site was built. There is also a probable historical connection: in July 1296, Peel Ring is said to have been the scene of Sir John de Melville’s submission to Edward I.

These are two distinct chronological statements: the earliest record of the castle remains and a probable historical episode from 1296.

The Lumphanan Paths Group’s walking trails follow the Old Military Road and offer views across Lumphanan and of the Cairngorms. Both the view of the village and the Cairngorms landscape are highlights. This gives you a useful distinction when choosing a route: the trails link a named historic road with views of the surrounding countryside.

Golf in Lumphanan

Lumphanan Golf Club welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities. Check the visitor rules before playing. The 9-hole course is enjoyable but challenging, and offers spectacular views of the countryside. Course details may change over time, so check the latest information if you are planning a round. The nine holes, the challenging character and the countryside views give you different points to consider when deciding whether golf suits your travel interests.

Another Listed Building

Lumphanan’s architectural heritage also includes Stothert Memorial Centre, a Category C listed building. This adds two distinct themes to the village’s character: at Peel Ring, the focus is on the earth bank and former ditch; at Stothert Memorial Centre, on its status as a listed building. If historic buildings interest you, Lumphanan offers more than one perspective on its built heritage.
