Walking in Croft

The walking guides published by Croft Parish Council cover routes from 4 to 16 kilometres. This range gives you a clear starting point for comparing options as you plan: you can first decide on your preferred distance, then consider the details of each route and its terrain. This lets you choose based on specific route information.

The walking guides follow country roads, public rights of way and paths. The terrain is often uneven and can occasionally be wet or muddy. For this reason, they recommend sturdy footwear or walking boots. When comparing routes, it is worth considering the type of path and terrain as practical planning factors, alongside the distance in kilometres.

Walk 5 is a 4-kilometre walking route around Silver Lane Ponds and the adjacent meadow. The Croft Great Circular is a 16-kilometre route that enters Culcheth Linear Park along the boundary between Croft and Culcheth. The two routes therefore cover distinctly different distances; their descriptions also mention different specific landmarks. Specifically, the Croft Great Circular is 12 kilometres longer than Walk 5 and four times as long.

Most walks can start and finish at the Horseshoe Inn, the General Elliot or The Plough. If you plan to include one of these pubs on your walk, check the availability of the relevant establishment separately.

The walking routes provide a clear focus when considering Croft as a place to stay. You can consider the distance, path conditions and the stated start and end points together, then decide for yourself whether this walking focus suits your planned trip.

Churches and local history

Christ Church is open every Sunday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., unless a joint service is being held at Newchurch Parish Church or St Oswald’s Winwick. If you are planning a Sunday visit, check the opening hours before travelling.

Christ Church in Croft also contains a memorial stone to Ellen Yates. The memorial stone makes Christ Church a place of local remembrance, with this memorial dedicated to a specific person, Ellen Yates.

The Church of St Lewis contains a fine marble altar dedicated to Our Lady, as well as elaborately carved Stations of the Cross made from hardwood. The materials, dedication and carving define the features described here. By contrast, Christ Church, with its memorial stone to Ellen Yates, is a focal point for local remembrance; its conditional Sunday opening hours are also important when planning a visit. These are two specific themes: church furnishings and commemorative history.
