Ellel: Discover Industrial History and Canal Structures
Accommodation in Ellel
A trip to Ellel has a distinct focus on architectural and industrial history. The themes range from Galgate Silk Mill and canal structures to memorials and annual events in Galgate. Dolphinholme offers further historical connections; the Church of St John is in Ellel.
Canal Structures and Industrial History
Galgate Silk Mill is a Grade II listed building. A notable turning point in its history came in 1792, when it was converted from a water-powered grain mill into a silk mill. The building thus reflects two successive industrial functions: first, grinding grain using water power, and later, processing silk. The date refers to the conversion and makes the change in use specific.
Different engineering purposes can also be compared along the Lancaster Canal. Listed Aqueduct No. 87 carries the canal over the River Conder. Galgate Bridge No. 86, by contrast, is a road bridge over the Lancaster Canal. Its form is described precisely: a single elliptical arch with a stepped keystone. The comparison helps distinguish the structures: the aqueduct carries the canal over a river, while the bridge crosses the canal.
Monuments, Architecture and Landscape
The Church of St John in Ellel is a Grade II listed building. In Galgate, the Parish of Ellel War Memorial commemorates the First World War; it dates from 1921 and was later extended with additions commemorating the Second World War. The memorial includes an elaborately designed Gothic wheel cross with a deeply carved Lancashire rose. Alongside its historical context, this detail offers a tangible glimpse of the memorial’s design. The memorial is also listed as Grade II.
Ellel Grange Home Farm and Walled Garden date from 1857 and 1862. The complex also includes two lintels dated to 1699. These older structural elements predate the stated dates for the complex and offer a further reference point for its architectural history. In Dolphinholme, Castle Hill motte is a Scheduled Monument: a grass-covered mound above the River Wyre’s floodplain. The places described thus include both purpose-built structures and a distinctive landform.
In 1784, Dolphinholme was the site of the world’s first worsted-spinning mill. Separately, the remains of Dolphinholme Worsted Mill and its gasworks are on private land. Take this restriction into account when planning your visit.
Annual Events in Galgate
The traditional Children’s Treat Fun Day is held annually in Galgate; its founding date is estimated to be 1889. The Gaslight Flower and Produce Show is also held annually, and its origins are estimated to date back to 1861. The two events therefore have different historical dates. If you plan to time your trip to coincide with either event, check the specific date again before making plans.
Canoe Trail to Lancaster
The canoe trail from Garstang to Lancaster passes through the Ellel Grange Private Estate and reaches Galgate Marina. Paddlers can end their trip early there. This makes a practical difference when planning the route: Galgate offers a stated option to shorten the trip rather than continue all the way to Lancaster. Crossing the private Ellel Grange Private Estate is also part of the route described.
