Accommodation in Flookburgh
Flookburgh combines historic buildings from several centuries with memorial sites from the world wars. It is also associated with the history of airship planning and Cark Airfield, as well as the annual Cumbria Steam Gathering. If you are looking for a hotel in Flookburgh, these themes offer different ways to shape your travel dates and interests.
Churches, War Memorial and Historic Houses
The Church of St John Baptist in Flookburgh is a Grade II* listed building. It was built between 1897 and 1900 to designs by Austin and Paley. St John's Flookburgh is open for visits and quiet prayer on most days from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. If you are planning a visit specifically to see the church, check the opening times locally beforehand.
Flookburgh War Memorial is a Grade II listed First World War memorial. It commemorates 29 soldiers from Cark and Flookburgh who died in the First World War.
The historic houses also represent different periods of construction. Number 53 With Outbuilding on Main Street is a Grade II listed house with an outbuilding, probably dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. 27 Market Street is a Grade II listed former shop, probably dating from the 18th century. Canon Winder Hall is a Grade II* listed farmhouse, probably dating back to the 16th century; it was altered and extended in the early 17th century. Whitewell House is a Grade II listed house dating from the late 17th or 18th century. A plaque on the building bears the date 1625. This date on the plaque should be distinguished from the probable dating of the house.
Airship History and Cark Airfield
Flookburgh was selected during the First World War as a safe place to build airships. Ravenstown was built to house the workers at the planned airship station. By the end of 1917, almost 120 houses had been completed in Flookburgh Model Aero Village. The planning of the airship station and the housing of its workers are both part of the town's history.
Six original Second World War aircraft dispersal pens remain at Cark Airfield. The Cumbria Steam Gathering is held annually on the last weekend in July at Cark Airfield in Flookburgh, where it has been based since 1986. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the date for your chosen year.
Market History and Geographic Orientation
Flookburgh was granted a market charter in 1412. Historically, the town also served as a midpoint between two sections of the across-the-sands route over Morecambe Bay. The market charter and the route represent different aspects of the past: one concerns market history, while the other reflects Flookburgh's role between two sections of a crossing over the bay.
For geographic orientation, Flookburgh lies south of Cark railway station.
