South Tyneside brings together coastal landscapes, Roman and Anglo-Saxon heritage, and a diverse cultural programme. In South Shields, the Foreshore and historic sites take centre stage; museums, event venues and parks add to the picture. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether the coast, history or events will shape your stay.

Roman and Anglo-Saxon heritage

In South Shields, Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort, is part of the Hadrian’s Wall component of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. If you are interested in the region’s different historical themes, Jarrow has its own focus: Jarrow Hall comprises an Anglo-Saxon farm, an Anglo-Saxon village and the Bede Museum. St Paul’s Church and Monastic Site is next to Jarrow Hall.

The permanent “The Story of South Tyneside” gallery at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery traces the region’s development from Roman times to the present day, giving a broader historical perspective than a single point of reference. The region’s technological history is also in focus: Souter Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the United Kingdom designed to operate with electric light.

Coast, landscape and activities

South Shields Foreshore is South Tyneside’s main destination for coastal leisure and tourism activities. The Leas spans two and a half miles of cliff-top grassland and wildflower meadows; the England Coast Path offers sweeping views. South Tyneside’s coast is internationally important and includes the Durham Coast Special Area of Conservation as well as the Northumbrian Coast Special Protection Area and Ramsar site.

North Marine Park also combines landscape and leisure: the park has been restored to its original Victorian character and features a Roman- and maritime-themed children’s play area as well as a fitness trail for adults. On the coast, South Shields Surf School offers stand-up paddleboarding and surfing lessons, as well as equipment hire. As the operator’s offering may change, it’s best to check lesson and hire availability before your visit.

For more water-based activities, Haven Point Pool & Leisure Complex offers swimming and water sports lessons through Swim England’s Learn to Swim Programme. Programme details may be updated, so check the latest lesson offerings before making plans.
