Morpeth: Park, Markets and History
Accommodation in Morpeth
Getting There and Finding Your Way
If you’re travelling to Morpeth, you can plan your stay around parks, history or visits to the markets. Morpeth railway station is served by trains on the East Coast Line from Edinburgh and London. It’s about half a mile on foot from the station to the town centre. The station and town centre therefore offer two points of reference on arrival: first the rail connection, then the walk into town.
Carlisle Park: River, Woodland and Botany
Carlisle Park lies on the River Wansbeck in Morpeth. Visitors can take rowing boats out on the river; the park also includes woodland where red squirrels live. The William Turner Garden commemorates William Turner, known as the “father of English botany.” The park thus brings together an activity on the river, woodland nature and the history of botany. You can focus your stay on the themes that interest you most.
“Picnic in the Park” is also held in Carlisle Park in the centre of Morpeth. This free annual family event offers another reason to include the park in your travel plans. If you’d like to plan your stay around it, check the exact event date in advance.
Buildings and Culture
The gatehouse of Morpeth Castle was built around 1300 and served more as a statement of prestige than as a defensive structure. The Oldgate Clock Tower is a well-preserved example of a post-medieval clock tower; its lower section is medieval. The buildings therefore offer different historical perspectives: the gatehouse is notable for its representative function, while the clock tower brings together structural elements from different periods.
The Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum is housed in a Grade I listed building dating from the 13th century. The museum displays more than 120 sets of bagpipes from across Europe. Here, the history of the building comes together with a collection with European connections. If you’re interested in architecture or bagpipe culture, Morpeth offers two clearly distinct cultural themes.
Markets and Dates
The Morpeth Wednesday Weekly Market takes place every Wednesday; the monthly Farmers Market is held on the first Saturday of each month. The Farmers Market offers local produce such as pies, pickled goods, artisan breads, cheeses and fruit chutneys. This gives you a concrete idea of the selection at the Farmers Market, as well as its schedule. If a particular market visit is the reason for your trip, check the relevant date in advance. The different schedules—weekly on Wednesdays, monthly on the first Saturday, and annually for the park festival—can be taken into account when choosing your travel dates.
Accommodation Type
Since the restoration of Morpeth Castle was completed in autumn 1991, holiday accommodation has been rented out there year-round. This type of accommodation differs from a hotel stay. If you’re considering this holiday accommodation, check current availability; when looking for a hotel, you can treat the type of accommodation as a separate selection criterion.
