Newtownbutler: Crom Estate and Local History
Accommodation in Newtownbutler
Nature and wildlife watching at Crom Estate
When looking for a hotel in Newtownbutler, it is worth considering the nature attractions at Crom Estate. The estate covers 2,000 acres of tranquil islands and ancient woodland and is one of Ireland’s most important nature reserves. At Derrymacrow Lough, there is a bird hide with a ramp and viewing slot for wheelchair users. Crom’s ancient yew trees form an interconnected pair: one male and one female yew, with a combined circumference of 377 feet (115 m).
Nature planning here offers two distinct options: the bird hide by the lough and a circular walk with several stops. The first focuses on birdwatching, while the second takes in the walking route and various points around the estate.
Walking and activities on the water
The circular walk through Crom Estate is 4.2 miles long and follows a variety of paths away from paved roads. Along the way, you pass Crom Old Castle, the boathouse, the Summer House and the ancient yew trees. The distance and trail conditions are useful points of reference when planning the walk as a separate part of your stay. Check conditions before setting out.
Water also shapes the activities available. Rowing boats and canoes are available at Crom Estate for exploring Lough Erne. Boat hire includes an introduction and maps of the estate and local attractions; check availability before travelling. There are different options for fishing: Upper Lough Erne has bank-fishing spots for bream, roach and perch. On Green Lough, an inland lake, pike fishing by boat is offered. The difference lies in both the water and the fishing method: bank-fishing spots on Upper Lough Erne versus boat fishing on Green Lough. Permits and availability for fishing may change.
Buildings and history
Old Crom Castle was built in the early 17th century by Scottish settler Michael Balfour and survived two sieges by the Jacobites in 1689. Today, its ruins are a secluded monument. Crighton Tower, a stone folly, stands on Gad Island and was built as an observatory in the 19th century. The Battle of Newtownbutler inflicted the most significant defeat to date on King James’s army. In connection with the battle, a force took up position near Newtownbutler at the end of a narrow causeway through a bog.
