Redbridge: Nature, History and Everyday Culture
Accommodation in Redbridge
Redbridge can be explored from many different angles: nature reserves, historic sites, shopping and markets sit alongside routes for walking and cycling. The options range from a named walking trail to water sports and climbing. This lets you plan your stay around the things that interest you.
Nature, Trails and Water
Wanstead Park has the Chestnut Trail walking route. The park is designated a Grade II* Registered Park & Garden. It also retains some original remains of an impressive 18th-century mansion. The named walking trail and traces of history each give the park a distinctive character.
Hainault Forest Country Park includes woodland and has nine signposted walking trails. Visitors can hire boats at the boating lake; availability may change, so it is advisable to check before visiting. Those who prefer to choose from several marked trails will find a different kind of guide here than the single walking route at Wanstead Park.
Claybury Woods and Park includes ancient oak and hornbeam woodland, with spring flowers, old trees and fungi. A surfaced, traffic-free path for cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians also runs through the park. It connects north-west Redbridge with Fairlop, providing a specific route option for different ways of getting around.
Aldborough Hall Nature Reserve is a 39-hectare wildlife reserve. Designated trails and viewing areas offer opportunities to enjoy nature and take leisurely walks. Fairlop Waters Country Park also has accessible paths as well as natural routes for walking and wildlife watching. Both areas combine nature observation with designated opportunities to get around on foot.
Sailing, rowing and windsurfing are available on the large lake at Fairlop Waters. Boulder Park has nine boulders designed for solo climbing and suitable for different abilities. Water sports facilities and the Boulder Park setup may change, so check current availability in advance.
History and Local Culture
The Temple explores the history of Wanstead Park from Roman times through the Regency and Victorian eras to the present day. The story of the Roman villa is presented there through mosaics and other objects from the museum collection. This combines a broad sweep of history with specific objects from the collection.
Valentines Mansion was built around 1696 and has historic gardens. The building and gardens add another place to Redbridge’s historic attractions, bringing together architectural history and garden landscapes.
Ilford Lane is one of London’s major South Asian shopping districts. Ilford is also home to MM Ilford, a sustainable community market. Independent traders offer handcrafted food and dishes from around the world. As opening arrangements and offerings may change, check the market’s latest information before visiting.
Cycling and Getting Around
