Croydon: Parks, History and Culture

Croydon is home to around 127 parks and green spaces. There are also illustrated walks through its neighbourhoods and to historic landmarks, supported by online maps and printable fold-out maps. This makes it possible to shape a visit around nature, local history and culture, without every outing having to feel the same.

Parks and Trails in Croydon

South Norwood Country Park combines wildflower meadows and wetlands with a lake and a viewpoint hill. As a local nature reserve, it is also a good place for birdwatching: more than 100 bird species are observed there each year. A designated cycle path that forms part of the Water Link Way also runs through the park. Nature watching and a cycling route can therefore be enjoyed in the same park.

Wandle Park offers a different setting: this four-hectare park is in the town centre, and the River Wandle flows through it. Its facilities include a play area, a community garden, a rose garden, a fitness trail, a skatepark, a pond, a bandstand and tennis courts. Food plants and flowers are grown in the community garden; on Sundays, it offers a place to talk about gardening and growing things together. Compared with the nature-focused South Norwood Country Park, Wandle Park centres on the river and a wide range of park facilities.

Croham Hurst adds yet another kind of landscape: this extensive woodland is of historic and natural interest and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A public bridleway and walking path runs along its north-eastern boundary. The parks and paths therefore offer different experiences—from the cycle path in the country park to the public path along the boundary of Croham Hurst.

Airport History and Historic Sites

Croydon Airport Visitor Centre is a volunteer-run small museum at Airport House. It is housed in Britain’s first integrated airport terminal and control tower. When it opened in 1928, the terminal was the world’s first purpose-built airport terminal. Visits follow a set arrangement: the centre is open on the first Sunday of each month for pre-booked guided tours. Allow around an hour for the tour, followed by up to 30 minutes to explore the museum independently. Check the visiting arrangements in advance, as opening hours may change.

Croydon Minster has been a place of worship since Anglo-Saxon times; six Archbishops of Canterbury are buried there. Its reconstruction under the direction of Sir George Gilbert Scott led to its rededication in 1870. At Old Palace Croydon, historic highlights include the medieval Great Hall and the south wing. The south wing includes a long gallery, built around 1539 to complete the south court. Old Palace is considered the best-preserved example of a medieval palace of the Archbishops of Canterbury.

Another distinctive landmark is Shirley Windmill, a 17-metre-high brick tower mill commissioned by Richard Alwen in 1854. Much of its original Victorian machinery has been preserved. Visitors have a rare opportunity to see inside one of only four windmills in the capital that are open to the public. Opening dates may vary; check the dates before travelling.

Markets, Museums and Cultural Events

Surrey Street Market has been operating in Croydon town centre since 1276. Alongside its regular market stalls, it hosts weekly events. As the event programme may change, it is worth checking the dates for your planned visit. The Museum of Croydon announces tours and outreach activities developed in partnership with libraries and community-led projects. For a varied cultural programme, Fairfield Halls presents classical concerts, theatre, dance, comedy, exhibitions and conferences throughout the year; current events may change. The independent David Lean Cinema has 68 seats and is run by volunteers and local film enthusiasts. Screenings and programming may change here too.
