Hartest – Village History, Walks and Wine
Accommodation in Hartest
The Village Green brings together several local points of interest: Hartest War Memorial and Hartest Stone stand here, and the Village Fair is held here every year. All Saints, Hartest Wood and Giffords Hall’s vineyard offering add church music, woodland and wine tasting to these themes.
Village Green and Local History
The Green in Hartest is officially designated as a Village Green. Hartest War Memorial is a Grade II listed war memorial. It commemorates 15 soldiers who died in the First World War. Hartest Stone also stands on the Green. On 7 July 1713, it was decided to move it there as a reminder of an agreement. The memorial and the stone therefore represent different historical associations. The Village Fair is held on the same Green every year. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with the fair, check the dates in advance.
All Saints: Architecture and Concerts
All Saints is a Grade I listed church. The present building includes a chancel, a south aisle, a chapel and a 14th-century tower. The church therefore offers specific architectural points of interest, rather than just a single historic feature. All Saints also serves as a venue: concerts and recitals are held regularly in the church. If you would like to plan a visit to a concert, check the event dates in advance.
Hartest Wood and Walking Routes
Pask's Path is a public footpath running from the village of Hartest to the entrance of Hartest Wood. There are also footpaths and walks in and around Hartest ranging from 1 to 10 miles. This range offers different route lengths to help you plan. Hartest Hill is said to be the steepest hill in Suffolk.
Hartest Wood is managed to create and maintain habitats and contains numerous trees and hedgerows. A central sculpture called “The Gift” stands in the wood. Pedestrians can access Hartest Wood via Lawshall Road. At least four cars can pull off the road and park on the wide verge. Check local path and access conditions before your visit.
Vineyard Tour and Seasonal Food
Giffords Hall’s tour programme includes a guided vineyard tour for 2026. It includes a walk through the vines, a visit to the winery and Barrel Hall, and a tasting of four wines. Dates and availability may change; check the latest information before planning your visit.
The Crown in Hartest has a garden and serves seasonal food prepared with locally sourced produce wherever possible. Menus and service information may change. If you would like to eat there, check the current offering in advance.
Hartest Mill
Hartest Mill was a small post mill. Its roundhouse was rebuilt in 1844; the date refers to the roundhouse. Its remains are visible beside the adjoining, now gutted steam mill. The two neighbouring mill features can therefore be distinguished: the visible remains belong to the post mill’s roundhouse, while the steam mill is now gutted.
