Great Dunham lies on the crest of a low hill. Traces of prehistoric and Roman times meet medieval building history, mills and houses from later centuries in the village. There are also local clubs. If you choose Great Dunham for a stay, you can focus your interests on several specific themes: the history of St Andrew’s Church, milling technology or the clubs offering croquet and table tennis.

Early traces and St Andrew’s Church

The earliest documented find from Great Dunham is a flint blade attributed to either the Upper Palaeolithic or the Mesolithic period. Its dating remains uncertain between these two periods. Several areas of Roman settlement have also been identified. As a later written reference, Great Dunham is recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. This sequence brings together a prehistoric find, Roman settlement areas and a reference to the village in the 11th century, showing how far back the village’s history reaches.

St Andrew’s Church dates from around 1060 to 1100, and therefore from the 11th century. Many Roman bricks were used in its construction, and original Saxon and Norman features have also been preserved. These are different aspects of the same building: its approximate date, the reused materials and the features that survive. St Andrew’s Heritage Detective Trail describes features of the church from different centuries. The trail’s availability may change; check the latest information before making plans to visit.

Mills and historic houses

Great Dunham Smockmill stood on Great Dunham Common. Great Dunham Tower Mill was built to replace an earlier smock mill. It powered two pairs of French millstones, each measuring four feet in diameter.

Rookery Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building and a farmhouse dating from the early 19th century. Decorative carvings from the late 12th century were reused in the building, making them several centuries older than the farmhouse. Hill Farmhouse dates from the 16th or 17th century, was later extended and displays the main beams of its timber frame. Great Dunham Hall is an 18th-century farmhouse. Mill House is a former miller’s house; the date 1798 is inscribed on its gable stone.
