When planning a trip to Tewin, two specific interests come to the fore: the village’s architectural history and walking routes through the countryside. Historic buildings and village spaces tell stories from different centuries; the routes described lead through fields and woodland or past Queen Hoo Hall. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to focus on the architecture or the walking routes.

Historic Buildings and Village Spaces

Queen Hoo Hall is a Grade II*-listed country house. It was built around 1570 to 1585. The Tewin Village Conservation Area offers a different historical perspective: it encompasses the triangular Lower Green and Hertford Road. The buildings there date from the mid-17th to the late 20th century. In Tewin, you can therefore see both a country house from the late 16th century and a village scene with buildings from several later centuries.

The Church of St Peter has origins dating back to the 11th century. Its chancel was remodelled or redesigned in the 13th century; the south aisle and clerestory also date from this century. The west tower was added in the 15th century. The building phases can thus be distinguished chronologically, rather than reducing the church to a single date of origin. According to local tradition, the proximity of a Saxon settlement on the River Mimram and an ancient ford below the church may have played a part in the choice of the settlement’s location.

There is also a distinctive local story in the churchyard: for over 200 years, branches have grown through the tomb of Lady Anne Grimston. Another example of 20th-century architecture is Tewin Memorial Hall. Built in 1922 as a war memorial in the English Arts and Crafts style, it was influenced by the architectural style of Sir Edward Lutyens. Together with the church and the older buildings around Lower Green, these structures offer different points of interest if you want to learn about Tewin’s history.

Countryside and Walking Routes

The Mimram Valley at Tewin is also a community-led project to protect the historic landscape and environment of the Mimram Valley. Landscape conservation is therefore a distinct focus of the village alongside its architectural history.

Tewin Walk 3 – Queen Hoo Hall is 5.5 kilometres long. The route runs along the edge of Bramfield Park Wood and past Queen Hoo Hall. Tewin Walk 1 – Harmer Green follows public footpaths through a field and a wooded area. The descriptions therefore emphasise different features: Walk 3 can be identified by its length and the landmarks mentioned, while Walk 1 is defined by its route through fields and woodland. If you want to plan your walk around Queen Hoo Hall, Walk 3 is the route described as passing the house. The route descriptions were scheduled to be updated in summer 2026; check the latest route information before setting out.

Bus Services for Trip Planning

Tewin is served by bus routes 204, 378, 388 and 879. The routes connect the village with Welwyn Garden City, Hertford and Stevenage; route 879 runs on school days only. When choosing a hotel in Tewin, you can first decide what interests you most: the different building phases of St Peter’s and the historic village spaces, the landscape of the Mimram Valley, or one of the described routes.
