Royston offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: exhibitions and historic sites sit alongside nature trails and specific leisure facilities. Royston Museum, the Cave and the Town Trail each offer a different focus from Therfield Heath. When planning a stay, you can therefore choose between history at the museum, historic connections in the town centre, countryside and leisure facilities.

Local history at the museum and historic sites

Through its exhibitions, Royston Museum presents more than 2,000 years of Royston’s history. Topics range from the Romans and local industry to the Victorians, the world wars and entertainment. Its collection comprises almost 20,000 objects. The exhibitions and collection therefore offer different ways to explore the town’s past.

Royston Cave is a man-made, bell-shaped chamber cut into the Middle Chalk beneath the town. Its wall carvings are generally dated to around the 13th century. This makes the Cave distinct from the museum collection: here, the focus is on a single chamber and its carvings.

Another historic landmark is the Royston Parish Church of St John the Baptist. It was founded around 1162 as a priory of Augustinian canons. The Royston Town Trail explores the town’s history along the streets of the town centre. This lets you choose between a specific historic site and a perspective that explores local history in the streetscape.

Therfield Heath: trails and archaeological traces

Therfield Heath is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. Locally, the area is also known as Royston Heath. It includes woodland paths and chalk trails, as well as opportunities to see the rare pasqueflower. The plant is seasonal.

The archaeological features on Therfield Heath include a long barrow thought to date from the Neolithic period and several Bronze Age round barrows. All are designated as Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Alongside nature trails, the Heath therefore features a range of archaeological remains: a mound thought to be Neolithic and several Bronze Age burial mounds.

Green spaces and leisure facilities

The Priory Memorial Gardens have received the Green Flag Award several times and feature seasonal planting as well as mature woodland. The gardens include play areas for toddlers and older children, a splash park, a multi-use sports area and a youth shelter. The splash park operates seasonally; check before your trip whether it is open.

Royston Leisure Centre has a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool. If you would like to include the pool in your plans, check the centre’s current programme before visiting.

Planning your trip to Royston

Royston is at the junction of the A505 and A10 main roads. To choose a focus for your visit, it helps to understand the difference between the Town Trail and Therfield Heath: the trail explores local history along streets in the town centre, while the Heath brings together woodland paths, chalk trails and archaeological monuments. You can therefore shape your stay around either the history of the townscape or nature and archaeology.
