Boxted combines a landscape dominated by farmland with the River Stour, historic buildings and local amenities. Old Boxted lies within Dedham Vale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This means your stay can focus on different aspects of the area: its landscape and paths, architectural history, and specific activities.

Landscape and paths in Boxted

The River Stour flows through Boxted. At Boxted Mill/Weir, the portage route passes through a private garden and follows the signed portage path only. If you portage there, use this path only. Boxted Bridge crosses the River Stour at Wick Road/Lower Farm Road and was built in 1897. The bridge and the portage point are separate landmarks on the river.

An interactive map of public rights of way is available for Boxted; it shows the position as of 2025. A description from 2022 outlined the Boxted Village Walks as a circular route of approximately three miles around the village. The landscape consists mainly of farmland surrounded by scattered settlements. The river, rights of way and farmland thus offer different insights into the local area.

Historic buildings and architectural styles

The base of the west tower of the Church of St Peter dates from the mid-12th century. The church is open daily for private prayer. Boxted Hall is a 17th-century house, with later additions, and an H-shaped floor plan. Pond House is a Grade II listed building and preserves part of a rare late-medieval smoke-blackened kitchen.

Runkin's Corner also stands out for its specific architectural features: the cottage is among the smallest Georgian cottages in the region. Its high-quality oak framing retains extensive areas of wattle-and-daub infill. The buildings therefore illustrate different aspects of architectural history, including the shape of a floor plan, the date of a tower base and the materials of a timber-framed house. At Runkin's Corner, the infill refers to the material between the timbers; the frame and the infill are two distinct parts of the construction.

Boxted Airfield Museum

Boxted Airfield Museum is a small museum on the site of the former airfield in Boxted. Its collection includes a Link Trainer, an early flight simulator. The device provides a tangible connection between aviation history and flight simulation. For visitors interested in historic technology, it is a specific object within the museum's theme, not merely a general reference to the former airfield.

Farms and local activities

McLauchlans of Boxted is located at 53 Straight Road in Boxted, near Colchester. The farm shop sells homemade jam and other local products. The food truck serves coffee and treats made with fruit grown on the farm. Strawberries and other summer fruit are available for picking in the early summer months; this offer is closed for 2026.

Sweetpea Grow & Play offers weekly Forest School sessions and a Gardening Club in Boxted. Forest School sessions may be affected by extreme weather; the provider's booking arrangements apply to the Gardening Club. Conditions therefore vary by activity: the season matters for fruit picking, while weather or booking arrangements may affect Sweetpea activities.
