You can plan a trip to Little Stukeley around three specific themes: Ermine Street, the village’s history and a section of Via Beata. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Little Stukeley, these highlights provide a framework for exploring the destination according to your interests. The focus is on historical traces, a described walk and the service at St Martin. This takes you from a single architectural detail to local history and a route with several named stops.

Ermine Street and historical traces

Great Stukeley and Little Stukeley lie on either side of Ermine Street, the old Roman road. On this road stands the milestone “Milestone About 1/4 Mile South of Village”, about a quarter of a mile south of the village. It is listed as a Grade II building. The connection between the two villages and the old road, together with the milestone’s location, gives the local history a specific geographical context.

The Swan and Salmon was formerly an inn. A stone relief bearing the date 1676 is set into its east gable. Little Stukeley lies partly within the Little Stukeley Conservation Area.

The Little Stukeley War Memorial is a First World War memorial dating from 1920. It commemorates eight local service personnel who died in the war. Another name was added after the Second World War. These are two separate dates: 1920 is the date of the memorial, while the name was added only after the Second World War.

Walking on Via Beata

Section VBG13 of Via Beata is an easy walk from Burleigh Hill Farm near St Ives to Little Stukeley, passing through fields and woodland paths. The route follows a bridleway past Priestley Wood to Owl End, then goes through Great Stukeley to the main road, before continuing along a path to Little Stukeley.

Open space, services and transport context

Little Stukeley Recreation Area is one of Little Stukeley’s important open spaces and part of its green infrastructure. It is a different local feature from Via Beata: this is a named open space, while Via Beata is a walking section with a start, a destination and several waypoints.

At St Martin in Little Stukeley, a one-hour evening service is held at 6 pm on the second Sunday of each month from March to October, occasionally as Holy Communion. If you plan to attend, check the specific date in advance.

The main East Coast railway line to London runs through the Parish of The Stukeleys. The A14 Trunk Road also passes through the parish.
