Northamptonshire between history and nature
Accommodation in Northamptonshire
Discover Northamptonshire through its historic estates, museums and landscapes. Experiences range from collections and grand rooms to paths through forests and meadows, and along lakes. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether cultural attractions or outdoor activities should take centre stage. Routes also vary considerably in length, from a one-kilometre themed trail to a 14-mile linear park.
History and collections
Chester House Estate offers a glimpse of more than 10,000 years of human activity and is a free-to-visit historic attraction. It also hosts events throughout the year. The estate is just off the eastbound A45 between Wellingborough and Rushden.
The history of Delapré Abbey spans nearly 900 years. Originally founded in 1145, it was a Cluniac monastery; it also witnessed important historical events, including the Battle of Northampton in 1460. A tour of its gardens and parkland traces 900 years of landscape history. Groups can book one- or two-course lunches and cream teas in a historic room in advance. Delapré Park’s eight acres of gardens are set within around 500 acres of open parkland.
The shoe gallery at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery showcases more than 7,000 years of footwear history, from 5300 BC to the present day. Althorp has been the Spencer family home for more than 500 years. Its collections include paintings, furniture and ceramics, and its finely furnished interiors are also worth seeing. Althorp House is a 15-minute walk from the West Gate visitor car park.
Kirby Hall is a 17th-century Elizabethan mansion. Exhibitions in its grand rooms tell the story of its rise and decline, while the gardens have been recreated as they appeared in the late 17th century. Kirby Hall offers a tapestry trail. Rockingham Castle was built around 1070 on the orders of William the Conqueror as a motte-and-bailey castle, and offers castle tours.
Boughton House combines 18th-century landscaped gardens with woodland and an extensive country park. The mansion is one of Britain’s grandest and best-preserved stately homes. Inside, visitors can see important collections of fine art, furniture, tapestries, porcelain and carpets, as well as some of the best-preserved Baroque state rooms in the British Isles.
Silverstone Museum offers a different cultural focus, with immersive exhibitions featuring legendary racing cars and the stories of motorsport heroes. The museum is located at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire.
Trails, parks and countryside
Irchester Country Park has 200 acres of woodland, with trails, an adventure course with zip lines and a children’s playground. The 3.8-kilometre Ironstone Heritage Trail explores the history of ironstone mining; the park also has a railway museum about its history.
Sywell Country Park offers two routes of different lengths: the one-kilometre Waterworks Heritage Trail and a 2.5-mile circular route around the reservoir. Other paths run along the lake and through meadows. The lake opened in 1906 as a water supply reservoir for Rushden and Higham Ferrers.
Stanwick Lakes is a 750-acre countryside attraction and nature reserve in Northamptonshire’s Nene Valley. Families, walkers, cyclists and nature lovers can explore its paths and open spaces. The Nene Valley extends west from Northampton along the River Nene, through medieval villages and market towns to Peterborough. It encompasses 41,000 hectares of wildflower meadows, woodland and wetlands.
For longer routes, the Brampton Valley Way offers a clear route: the 14-mile linear park runs from Northampton to Market Harborough. Another way to experience the countryside is the Northampton & Lamport Railway, with its steam and heritage diesel locomotives. Visitors can ride the trains along the former railway line.
