Tattershall offers a focus on history and architecture, complemented by trails with a connection to nature. If you are considering the village for a hotel stay, these themes can help you decide what you want from your trip: from exploring the Great Tower to learning about the history of the Grammar School, as well as walking trails and wildlife observation. The sites differ in their historical function and visitor arrangements; you can consider both aspects separately when planning.

Castle Tower, College and Church Architecture

The Great Tower of Tattershall Castle is a 15th-century red-brick keep. Its seven floors can be explored. The building materials and floors offer tangible insights into its construction history, making the tower itself a fitting focus for a visit centred on architecture.

Tattershall College is the ruin of a Grammar School built in the late 15th century. It formed part of a complex of buildings erected by Ralph, Lord Cromwell. The school served Lord Cromwell’s tenants and their successors, providing them with a free education. The college’s history can therefore be considered not only through its construction date, but also through its former role as a school.

Holy Trinity Church in Tattershall is considered one of the finest examples of 15th-century Perpendicular Gothic architecture in Lincolnshire. Fragments of the glazing survive in the large east window. This offers a chance to focus both on the architectural style and on a specific detail of the church. As you leave the church, you can see Tattershall’s picturesque Bede Houses, which are former almshouses.

Another historical landmark is Tattershall Market Cross, also known as Butter Cross. It is thought to have been erected in the 15th century by Ralph, Lord Cromwell.

Trails and Wildlife Observation

The Tattershall Castle Archaeology & Wildlife Walk passes through the estate of Ralph, 3rd Baron Cromwell. The trail explores its history through archaeology and wildlife observation. This combines an interest in the historic estate with a walk whose subject explicitly includes observing nature.

Tattershall Carrs lies close to Tattershall. Several access points from the south lead into the two woodland areas. There are clearly marked, natural, permitted footpaths, and the terrain is relatively flat. In wet weather, however, the paths can be muddy and rutted. When planning, it is therefore worth considering not only the terrain but also the possible condition of the ground.
