Norton Disney: History and Woodland Trails
Accommodation in Norton Disney
Norton Disney is a destination for anyone interested in history and archaeological finds who would like to complement their stay with outdoor activities. Its themes range from a Roman villa and a parish church to a find from 2023. An aircraft depiction and a reported connection to Walt Disney are also among its historical associations. This gives you a choice of different areas of focus when planning your trip, rather than reducing the history of the place to a single period.
Roman Villa and Archaeological Find
West of Hill Holt Farm, the Roman villa was excavated by Adrian Oswald between 1934 and 1937. Its development comprised five phases, from the mid-1st century AD to the mid-4th century AD. At its greatest extent, the complex included a corridor house, a bath area, a basilican building, and a gatehouse; several enclosing ditches surrounded it. The five phases provide the chronological framework. The different buildings and ditches describe the complex at its greatest extent.
The Norton Disney dodecahedron offers another way to explore the Roman past. It was discovered during an archaeological excavation in June 2023. It is the 33rd known example from Roman Britain and the only one known from the Midlands. This places the individual find in both a wider context and a distinctive regional setting.
Church, Tombs, and Remembrance
The Church of Saint Peter is a parish church dating from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries; it was restored in 1886. Five notable tomb monuments with effigies are preserved in the Disney Chantry of the Church of St Peter. The church therefore offers two distinct historical points of interest: its architectural history spanning several centuries and its surviving tombs. The 1886 restoration is another notable date in its history.
Aviation history is also represented: the sculpture “On Freedom's Wings” depicts Lancaster R5689 “VN-N” of No. 50 Squadron, which was based at RAF Swinderby. Another kind of historical connection concerns Walt Disney: he is said to have visited Norton Disney in the 1950s. While the sculpture focuses on a particular aircraft and its squadron, the visit is recorded as a possibility.
Woodland Trails and Practical Planning
The Big Wood Rubbing Trail takes visitors to Big Wood on Wood Lane near Norton Disney. A trail map and rubbing sheet are provided for the activity. Hill Holt Wood is a 22-acre woodland with several walking trails. Its Experience Days include guided tours of the facilities and discussions on specific areas of interest. Availability for these activities may change, so check in advance.
Hill Holt Wood also has a specific access requirement: it can only be reached from the southbound side of the A46. Confirm the latest access information before setting out. The two woodland activities therefore have different planning considerations: the Big Wood Rubbing Trail is described as being near Norton Disney, while access and the availability of Experience Days are important for Hill Holt Wood.
When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the themes: the villa and parish church represent architectural and local history, while the dodecahedron is an individual archaeological find. The woodland activities offer a different focus, with trails or guided experiences.
