Chapel-En-Le-Frith lies on higher ground in the north-west of the Derbyshire Peak District. If you are looking for a hotel in Chapel-En-Le-Frith, historic streets, crosses, walking trails and leisure facilities provide practical points of reference when planning your stay. Cobblestone streets, historic buildings and the surrounding terrain shape the town centre. You can also choose between a self-guided walk, an audio trail and local events, each offering a different focus. This can help you decide in advance whether you want to spend your stay mainly exploring the historic town centre or taking part in specific activities.

Old Town and historic crosses

The well-preserved Old Town includes cobbled streets such as Church Brow. It lies on rising ground behind the main street frontage; the Market Place is higher than street level. If you explore the town centre on foot, you can take this layout into account when planning your route. A group of old coaching inns stands at the edge of the Market Place, reflecting Chapel-En-Le-Frith’s historic role as a stop on coach routes.

The Church of St Thomas Becket dates from the early 14th century and was remodelled in 1733. An Anglo-Scandinavian cross dating from the late 9th or 10th century stands immediately west of the church. Its stylistic changes are associated with Viking settlement. The Market Cross dates from a much later period: this well-preserved standing sandstone cross is on the south side of the Market Place and dates from the late Middle Ages or early modern period. It appears to still be in its original location. The war memorial was erected in 1919 to commemorate the men from the parish of Chapel-En-Le-Frith who served in the First World War.

Walks and landscape

The Old Town Trail is a free, self-guided walk through the historic centre. It starts at the car park on Thornbrook Road. Check whether the leaflet is available before you arrive. The Combs Moss Audio Trail is also a circular walking route, up to eight miles long, and starts at Chapel-En-Le-Frith railway station. The different starting points are useful for finding your way: the Old Town Trail starts at the car park on Thornbrook Road, while the Combs Moss Audio Trail starts at the railway station.

The town’s landscape is also reflected in the location of its founding chapel: it was built on a spur below Eccles Pike, in a broad valley sheltered by the long, high ridge of Combs Moss. Chapel-En-Le-Frith railway station is served by trains from Manchester and Buxton on most days. Check the timetable before travelling, as services may change.
