If you would like to include village history and walking routes in your travel plans, Barlborough offers several specific starting points. When looking for a hotel, you might first consider whether your interests lie more in historic buildings, a guided local experience, or walking routes and leisure activities.

Getting here and planning your stay

Barlborough is at Junction 30 of the M1 and is easily accessible from the National Rail Network. These are two different points of reference for planning your journey: a specific motorway junction and general accessibility by train. If you are travelling by train, check the services for your travel date.

Historic buildings and village history

Barlborough Hall is a Grade I listed country house and is now used as a school. Barlborough Hall has walled gardens, probably laid out in the 16th century, a 16th-century garden pavilion, and parkland with origins in the 16th century.

St James's Church on Church Street was originally a 12th-century building. Barlborough Village Cross is a Grade II* listed village or market cross and probably dates from the 14th century. The village's history therefore spans the original 12th-century church building, the cross probably dating from the 14th century, and the garden and parkland features associated with the 16th century.

Heritage Centre and guided village walks

The Barlborough Heritage Centre displays mining equipment as well as smaller agricultural tools and equipment. The centre also offers guided walks through the historic village of Barlborough. These village walks must be booked in advance by appointment and require a minimum of twelve participants.

On foot: footpath network and routes

Barlborough is the hub of a network of public footpaths and bridleways. The Chaffinch Trail starts in Barlborough and links the historic villages of Barlborough and Spinkhill in the north of Derbyshire. The Monnies Heritage Walk links the historic villages of Barlborough and Clowne in the District of Bolsover in Derbyshire. The routes differ in their destinations: the Chaffinch Trail leads to Spinkhill, while the Monnies Heritage Walk links Barlborough with Clowne. Check local path conditions before setting out, as they can change.

For planning purposes, these offer different selection criteria: for the Heritage Centre, advance booking and a minimum group size matter; for the two named walking routes, the destinations provide an initial guide. First decide whether you want to plan a guided walk through the historic village or follow the route towards Spinkhill or Clowne.

Golf and FootGolf

Barlborough Links Golf Club has a 9-hole golf course. There is also a separate 9-hole FootGolf course, apart from the regular golf course. Both facilities have nine holes, but the FootGolf course is separate from the regular golf course. FootGolf can be booked by phone. Check the club’s latest information in advance, as details may change.
