Körner: Volkenroda Monastery Estate and Cycle Route
Accommodation in Körner
Körner and Volkenroda
For planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the Unstrut-Werra Cycle Route passes through Körner. Volkenroda Monastery Estate, with its school farm and St. Mary’s Monastery Church, is in the district of Volkenroda, which belongs to the municipality of Körner. The municipality therefore offers both a connection to the cycle route in Körner and a distinct focus on the monastery, animals and hands-on activities in Volkenroda.
Farm, Discovery Barn and Crafts
Visitors can see raccoons at the school farm. At the farm, children and families can get up close to goats, rabbits, donkeys and other animals. The Discovery Barn at the school farm is aimed at children and young people: they can experience animals at close quarters, explore nature, investigate, play and try things out. Another hands-on activity is the Open Studio, where visitors can work freely with wood. Nativity-scene-making courses are offered there in the run-up to Christmas.
The farmers’ market also follows a clear schedule: it takes place at the monastery estate from March to November, on the first Saturday of each month. Check the specific date before setting out. That way, you can plan your visit around whether you want to experience the market or a seasonal activity such as the nativity-scene-making courses.
Monastery Church, Pavilion and Meditation Trail
The former Cistercian church of St. Mary was consecrated in 1150. Church services and prayer times are held daily in the monastery church. During the summer months, the Christ Pavilion is also used for Sunday services and daily midday prayers. The pavilion’s building materials include steel, glass, exposed concrete and marble. The “Ausweg” (Way Out) meditation trail starts just behind the farm; its stations invite visitors to pause and reflect. Together, the church, pavilion and trail connect historic architecture, religious practice and a quiet invitation to contemplation.
Visiting and Staying Overnight in Volkenroda
Pilgrims can stay in simple, affordable accommodation at the Pilgrim Hostel. Confirm availability before your trip. Coffee is served at the monastery gate and in the monastery shop. The Christ Pavilion, the monastery church and other buildings on the monastery grounds are accessible by wheelchair and pushchair via step-free routes. As conditions at individual entrances may change, check before your visit. If you would like to attend church services or prayer times, check the schedule for your travel dates.
More to Explore in the Wider Unstrut-Hainich Destination
In the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination, the treetop walk offers two different perspectives: the walkway runs 24 metres above the Hainich canopy, while the tree tower takes visitors who are comfortable with heights up to a platform 40 metres above the ground. From there, the view stretches across the Hainich to the Thuringian Basin. In the national park, the Betteleichenweg trail passes the Ihlefelder Kreuz, the Eiserne Hand and Ihlefeld. In spring, it also runs through flowering stands of wild garlic and corydalis.
Another regional attraction is the National Park Centre at Thiemsburg. Its exhibition presents information through films, large-format image walls, interactive stations and hands-on exhibits. A fully accessible media guide is also available there; tablets and headphones can be borrowed. These attractions complement Körner’s monastery, farm and cycle-route offerings with more ways to explore the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination.
