For a stay in Scheibe-Alsbach, summer hikes, the reservoir and the biathlon tradition offer practical points of reference. The tent fair also gives your trip a seasonal focus. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether hikes, the circular trail around the reservoir or an event date will shape your stay.

Summer hiking

In summer, Scheibe-Alsbach is a starting point for easy, moderate and challenging hikes along the nearby Rennsteig and on certified hiking trails. The well-developed and signposted network of hiking trails includes shelters and rest areas. The different levels of difficulty give you an initial guide when choosing a route. Before setting out, check local information on current trail conditions.

The Scheibe-Alsbach Reservoir

The Scheibe-Alsbach Reservoir was created in 1944 and is surrounded by forests and meadows. A circular trail runs directly around the reservoir and is about 2.6 kilometres long. The body of water has been used for drinking water supplies since 1968, so swimming is prohibited. Two different aspects are therefore important for your planning: the circular route as a walking trail and the swimming ban at the reservoir. Before your visit, check local information on current access conditions.

Tent fair, biathlon and local culture

The tent fair is the largest folk festival in Scheibe-Alsbach and is celebrated every year on the second weekend in September. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year before booking a hotel. Biathlon has been closely associated with Scheibe-Alsbach for around 50 years. On 27 June 2026, the Thuringian Youth Cup in cross-country skiing and biathlon took place at the “Am Rußtiegel” biathlon facility; the programme included an obstacle cross-country race and an RWS series. For Open Monument Day on 14 September 2025, the church in Scheibe-Alsbach was open from 08:00 to 18:00. If you are planning your trip specifically around a festival or competition, check the date locally for your intended travel year.

Culture and routes in Neuhaus am Rennweg

In the wider travel destination of Neuhaus am Rennweg, the interactive museum explores the lives of the “Wäldler” and invites visitors to listen, linger and take an active part. The interactive museum in the town centre presents the glassmaking history and history of the Rennsteig town. The Geißlerhaus, located in the birthplace of Dr Heinrich Geißler (1814–1879), is also a museum where the glassmaking history and history of the Rennsteig town of Neuhaus am Rennweg are presented.

The Gothic wooden church in the town centre of Neuhaus am Rennweg was consecrated in 1892 and is one of the few entirely wooden churches in Germany. Its windows feature geometric and ornamental stained glass; the colours are arranged according to the ripening of the grapes. The routes also have a connection to Neuhaus am Rennweg: the Rennsteig high-altitude trail runs right through the town. The Rennsteig archery trail starts and ends at the Igelshieb sports ground, close to the Rennsteighaus.
