Sömmerda: Local History and Events
Accommodation in Sömmerda
If you are looking for a hotel in Sömmerda, the purpose of your trip can help guide your plans: local history, a memorial site, or an event each call for different planning priorities. For planning your stay, it is also helpful to know the approximate distances between the train station, bus station, town center, and tourist information office. Be sure to take event dates and the current situation at individual venues into account before your trip.
Routes, Market Square, and Getting Here
From the town center and tourist information office, the train station is about a ten-minute walk away, and the bus station about a five-minute walk. The routes mentioned follow Bahnhofstraße or Weißenseer Straße. As these are approximate walking times, you can use them as a guide for your own plans. Sömmerda Tourist Information is located in the town center on the Market Square, directly opposite the historic town hall. You can reach it directly by bicycle via the Unstrut Cycle Route; check the route and its conditions before setting off.
Town Wall and Erfurt Gate
Thanks to regular restoration and renovation work, Sömmerda’s town wall is well preserved. Of the town gates, only Erfurt Gate remains; all the others were demolished. The gate is now a protected historic monument. According to chronicle accounts, it was built in 1395 as an entrance to the town, as part of the existing fortifications. It was one of the town wall’s original five gates; the wall itself was expanded from 1589 onward. Erfurt Gate thus brings together two different periods: its reported construction in the Middle Ages and the later expansion of the wall.
Museum and Memorial Site
After almost three years of renovation work, the Dreyse House opened as a museum of local history and technology and a library on Open Monument Day in 2005. This opening marked a significant moment in the building’s history. Another detail relevant to planning is that the permanent exhibition “Industrial History in Sömmerda” is closed until November 20, 2027. If you would like to visit this exhibition, check its current status before your visit.
The “Gate 8” memorial and educational site was officially inaugurated on January 27, 2025. It commemorates 1,300 Jewish women prisoners who were held at the Sömmerda subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp from September 1944 to April 1945 and forced to work at the local Rheinmetall-Borsig AG factory. The town’s history therefore encompasses not only buildings and museums, but also remembrance of persecution and forced labor during the Nazi era.
Events Throughout the Year
The Sömmerda town festival takes place every year in June in the town center. The program includes dance performances, live music, shows, and activities for children. In Rohrborn, Waid is milled at the Waid mill as in the past, both on the annual Mill Day at Pentecost and at the Waid Mill Festival in August; information about the old tradition is also provided at both events. The dates therefore fall at different times of the year and in different locations. Check the dates and program for the relevant edition when planning your trip, rather than relying solely on the usual timeframe.
Plan your travel dates around the event in question, and take the approximate routes to the train station, bus station, and Market Square into account. This will help you choose a hotel that suits the specific reason for your trip, without combining different destinations and dates into a single focus for your stay.
