Schmalkalden: Half-timbered houses, castle and Reformation history
Accommodation in Schmalkalden
In Schmalkalden, half-timbered houses, Reformation history and hands-on experiences shaped by traditional crafts sit side by side. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you would like to explore historic buildings, visit a museum or take part in an activity yourself. The town offers a range of options, from St. George’s Church to the glass-walled nougat manufactory.
The town’s history in its church and castle
Construction of St. George’s Church began in 1413/14, incorporating parts of an earlier Romanesque church. Another important milestone in its history was 1537: at the most significant meeting of the Schmalkaldic League, the best-known theologians of the time preached in the church. Martin Luther presented his Schmalkaldic Articles there. These events give the church a direct connection to the town’s Reformation history.
Wilhelmsburg Castle rises above the old town. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the time of Martin Luther and the Schmalkaldic League. At the museum, visitors can also see its magnificent reception halls, richly decorated castle church, original room layouts with murals and stucco work, the lords’ kitchen and the terrace garden. A historic wooden-pipe organ is also part of the collection and is still playable. If you plan to visit these interiors, check the latest opening hours and access conditions beforehand.
Half-timbered houses and insights into historic buildings
The Luther House in Schmalkalden is a half-timbered house built around 1520. The Half-Timbered House Experience Centre offers a different way to explore this style of construction: visitors can discover the vaulted cellar, living rooms and staircases, as well as the crawl space, façade, masonry and wall structures, front building and courtyard. Along the way, they can explore the connection between historic and contemporary architecture. The house is described as the oldest half-timbered house in Schmalkalden and is also one of the five oldest half-timbered houses in Thuringia.
The two buildings have different focuses: the Luther House is a building dating from around 1520, while the Half-Timbered House Experience Centre focuses on a variety of rooms and building structures, as well as the interplay between old and new architecture. When choosing what to visit, you can therefore focus either on the history of a single house or on the variety of its architectural details.
Industrial history and collections
At Neue Hütte, an early industrial blast furnace can still be understood in its entirety thanks to its excellent state of preservation. Visitors can explore the original furnace all the way around and climb to a height of over 11 metres. This makes the visit different from exhibitions on the town’s history and architecture: here, the preserved furnace and the industrial site itself take centre stage.
The Historicum Zinnfigurenmuseum offers another museum theme: across 400 m², it displays more than 20,000 fully three-dimensional, hand-painted tin figures in recreated scenes from world history. The large number of figures and their presentation in scenes offer a different way of exploring history from the buildings and rooms at Wilhelmsburg Castle or the Half-Timbered House Experience Centre.
Guided tours, a circular route and nougat
From April to October, public guided tours of Schmalkalden’s historic old town are offered. For exact dates and departure details, contact the tourist information office. Another way to connect points of interest in the town is the “Around Wilhelmsburg” circular route: it starts at Altmarkt, passes the Luther House and climbs up to Wilhelmsburg Castle.
