Nordhausen: City Museums, Mining and Gypsum Karst
Accommodation in Nordhausen
This can help you decide whether you mainly want to explore the city’s history or also include topics such as mining and gypsum karst in your travel plans.
Museums in the City of Nordhausen
FLOHBURG | The Nordhausen Museum presents the city’s eventful history across three floors, from its beginnings to the present day. If you would rather explore the topics as part of a guided tour, tours are available by arrangement. Please coordinate your visit in advance, as arrangements may change.
The Museum Tabakspeicher focuses on crafts, trade, industry and archaeology. Its exhibitions cover more than 1,000 m². Special interactive areas showcase telecommunications technology from different centuries; visitors can also see old projection equipment in the cinema hall. Tastings of schnapps and chewing tobacco are also available. Check before your trip whether these are currently offered.
The two museums have different focuses: FLOHBURG covers Nordhausen’s history across a broad span of time, while Tabakspeicher explores specific fields such as trade, industry and archaeology. Its interactive technical exhibits and historic projection equipment complement this thematic perspective. This can help you decide whether you would prefer an overview of the city’s history or insights into specific areas of work and knowledge during your stay.
More Topics in the Broader Nordhausen Travel Destination
The history of mining and gypsum karst also shape the attractions in the broader Nordhausen travel destination. Rabensteiner Stollen is the only visitor coal mine in Central Germany. A guided tour introduces visitors to nearly 300 years of hard-coal mining in the Harz and passes coal remnants, fossils, authentic work sites, mined-out seams and workings that are often only 60 cm high. First, the “Rabenstein-Express” mine train travels 500 m into the mountain; the route then continues into workings dating from the 18th century. Check the current guided-tour arrangements before visiting.
The Ilfeld Local History Museum focuses on the history of Ilfeld and Wiegersdorf. It complements the city-history perspective offered by the Nordhausen museums with a distinct local focus. For nature and landscape topics, the SĂĽdharz Nature Park Information Centre offers an interactive exhibition on the gypsum karst landscape and the special features of the southern Harz.
The Karstwanderweg trail crosses the district of Nordhausen for 56 kilometres from east to west. The Feuersalamanderpfad is one section of it: it passes below and above MĂĽhlberg in the nature reserve, through a gypsum karst uvala and past sinkholes, spoil heaps, caves and historic traces. The route and its landforms offer a different focus from the museums and mine visit. The Harz Narrow Gauge Railway connects Wernigerode in the northern Harz with Nordhausen in the southern Harz foothills.
Food and Seasonal Activities
For another perspective on history and food and drink, the “From Grain to Spirit” tour at Echter Nordhäuser Traditionsbrennerei takes you through a historic complex, from the mill room to the distillery, brandy warehouse, office and cask cellar, ending at the Henriette Bar. There, visitors can sample the distillery’s own premium spirits and liqueurs. Availability depends on the date, so check for a suitable date before planning your trip. At the Museum Tabakspeicher, by contrast, schnapps and chewing tobacco are the tasting options.
In the broader Nordhausen travel destination, Burggasthof Hohnstein serves upscale traditional German cuisine and regional specialities amid the historic ruins of Hohnstein Castle. From its terrace, you can look out over Neustadt and the southern Harz. As access to the restaurant depends on its operating arrangements, check in advance whether a visit is possible.
A seasonal option is the Neustadt outdoor pool. Facilities include a water slide, a paddling pool, a diving facility with 1- and 3-metre boards, a playground, and football, volleyball and table tennis courts. Check the current opening status and available facilities before your trip. Activities for children in Harztor also include “Harztor Wanderkinder”; programme details may vary, so it is worth checking the current offer.
The travel destination therefore offers a wide range of themes: city history and technical exhibitions in Nordhausen, as well as mining, gypsum karst, regional cuisine and seasonal leisure activities in the broader Nordhausen travel destination. Choose your hotel search based on which of these themes matter most to you during your stay.
