Bad Frankenhausen/Kyffhäuser combines a river-meadow landscape, monumental art and historic buildings. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on destinations in town or also on sights in the wider Kyffhäuserkreis travel region.

Landscape and townscape

Bad Frankenhausen lies at the foot of the Kyffhäuser, surrounded by a river-meadow landscape of fields, pastures and orchard meadows. These landscape features give the town a character distinct from major cultural destinations: fields, pastureland and orchards define the scenery, while striking buildings and the Panorama Museum offer their own focal points in the town. This means you can choose between landscapes, art and architectural history when planning your trip.

Art and architectural history in Bad Frankenhausen

The Panorama Museum presents Werner Tübke’s monumental painting “Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany.” The domed exhibition space is 14 metres high and has a circumference of 123 metres; the painting depicts more than 3,000 figures. The measurements describe the space, while the number of figures describes the world depicted in the painting. You can visit the museum as part of a public guided tour or with an audio guide.

The Oberkirche in Bad Frankenhausen is also known as the Church of Our Lady on the Hill. It was completed as a Gothic basilica in 1382 and funded by the local salt-boilers’ guild. The Hausmann Tower represents a different chapter in architectural history: it was a keep with a palas, built around 1210 and incorporated into the newly constructed town wall. The buildings thus bring together a religious structure and a defensive tower connected to the town wall.

The Hausmann Tower can be reached via Poststraße; there is a car park by the spa gardens. If you are planning a visit to the Kyffhäuser-Therme, please note the current situation: the saltwater spa uses brine from the certified local Kyffhäuser spring. Its bathing and wellness areas are currently closed for modernisation.

Routes and other destinations in Kyffhäuserkreis

The Barbarossa Cave is in the wider Kyffhäuserkreis travel region. It is an anhydrite cave between the districts of Rottleben and Steinthaleben in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland. Five miners discovered it in 1865 in connection with the resumption of copper shale mining. It was named after the legend of the returning Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa.

Another underground attraction is the Erlebnisbergwerk Sondershausen. Guided tours are offered there year-round at a depth of 670 metres, including an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The mine also has the world’s deepest concert hall, where concerts and cabaret performances are regularly held. The cave and mine therefore offer different experiences: the Barbarossa Cave is notable for its discovery history, while the Erlebnisbergwerk offers tours and events underground.

The Kyffhäuserweg is a 37-kilometre circular trail that starts and ends in Bad Frankenhausen. Its three stages run from Bad Frankenhausen to the Barbarossa Cave, from there to the Kyffhäuser Monument, and back to Bad Frankenhausen. The trail is certified as a Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland, is well signposted and regularly checked for defects. A shorter regional alternative is the forest nature trail, which runs for four kilometres between the Rothenburg castle ruins and the Kyffhäuser Monument and includes ten activity stations.

From April to October, a monument shuttle is available for people with reduced mobility at the Kyffhäuser Monument on Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 and 17:00, running between the car parks and the ticket area. It also operates on weekdays during Thuringian school holidays. Check the schedule before your trip.
