When looking for a hotel in Herschdorf, your planned itinerary can provide a practical guide. The activities described differ in route type, course and destination. Options include a circular route of around six kilometres to the Lange-Berg-Denkmal monument, other hiking trails, a path suitable for families with children, and mountain bike tours of varying difficulty.

Hiking on the Langer Berg

There are three hiking car parks in Herschdorf and Willmersdorf, right by the Langer Berg. The suggested circular route to the Lange-Berg-Denkmal monument starts at the Langer Berg hiking car park in Herschdorf. From there, it follows the yellow trail markers to the monument at an elevation of 809 m. The return leg follows the Panoramaweg to the Herschdorf hiking car park; the total distance is around 6 km. This figure covers the entire circuit, including the outward and return legs. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Another suggested hiking trail leads from Herschdorf via Dröbischau in the direction of Barigau and follows the hiking trail signs. The Pilzsteig leads from Herschdorf in the direction of Neustadt am Rennsteig. This gives you a choice of different routes: a circular trail to the monument that returns to Herschdorf, as well as trails identified by their respective direction.

More trails and activities

The Wichelpfad between Herschdorf and Gillersdorf is suitable for families with children. If you plan to follow the trail, check its current condition before your visit.

Mountain bike tours of varying difficulty are possible on unmarked trails around Herschdorf. This sets them apart from the hiking trails described: the route to the monument is marked with yellow trail markers, while the route via Dröbischau follows hiking trail signs. For the mountain bike tours, both the type of trail and the varying levels of difficulty are factors in choosing a route.

Church and culture in Herschdorf

The “Zum Lamme Gottes” church in Herschdorf on the Langer Berg was built between 1687 and 1691. Its predecessor had been demolished because it was too small and dilapidated. Concerts in various genres are occasionally held in the church. If you would like to plan your trip around a concert, check the dates in advance.

Großbreitenbach as the wider travel destination

The wider travel destination of Großbreitenbach extends across a plateau between the Langer Berg, the Schwarza Valley and the Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail. Großbreitenbach is home to St. Trinitatis Church, which has 600 seats and is the largest half-timbered church in Thuringia. It was built from 1679 as a replacement for the dilapidated Johanniskirche. This predecessor church was built in 1570 and collapsed in 1771, with only its church tower remaining. St. Trinitatis Church was built according to the plans of Andreas Rudolphi, the Saxon-Gotha master builder, and consecrated in 1690. It is entirely clad in slate, and a striking hexagonal roof turret sits atop the steep roof of the broad nave. The wooden baptismal font dating from 1677 was transferred from the old Johanniskirche.
