Neudietendorf lies in the Apfelstädt Valley on the southern edge of the Thuringian Basin. In the village, the Weidbach, which comes from Sülzenbrücken, flows into the Apfelstädt; its source is in Mühlberg. The view to the southwest also helps orient visitors: from Neudietendorf, you can see the Drei Gleichen, a group of castles that gives the area its name. Neudietendorf is the cultural and geographical center of the municipality of Nesse-Apfelstädt. The destination brings together landscapes, waterways and local history.

Orchard Meadows and Nature in Neudietendorf

A specific natural attraction is the “Kirchberg” orchard meadow in Neudietendorf. It was established in 1724 and has been cultivated ever since. The meadow is a habitat for numerous animal and plant species, including some that are highly endangered. Its long history of cultivation and role as a habitat for many species make the meadow a natural feature that can be tied to a specific, named place. For example, the local conservation group offers tours for families and children in the orchard meadow on Kirchberg; ask them about current dates before planning a tour.

The Bohemian Brethren and the Church Hall

The settlement of the “Bohemian Brethren” is part of the village’s history. In 1742, members of the “Bohemian Brethren” acquired an old manor estate from Count Gotter, together with a settlement on the banks of the Apfelstädt. Ten families settled there, intending to live according to the Herrnhut model. The early community was dissolved several times because of disagreements with the Lutheran rulers. Its history thus includes both the founding of a community and repeated breaks in its continuity. The building sequence began with choir houses for unmarried brothers and sisters; the church hall and other buildings were added later. The foundation stone of the church hall was laid on April 6, 1779, and it was consecrated on December 2, 1780. These dates mark two different stages for the same building: the laying of the foundation stone and its later consecration. Together, the settlement, choir houses and church hall form a sequence that allows the development of this historic place to be traced.

The Gottesacker Cemetery and Easter Liturgy

The cemetery, known as the Gottesacker, is also part of the village’s history. Its design is simple: the uniform, horizontal gravestones bear only the deceased person’s name, dates of birth and death, and a verse. The oldest grave in the Gottesacker dates from 1743. On Easter Sunday, the Easter liturgy is celebrated there at sunrise. The Gottesacker brings together simple funeral design and a religious observance in the annual calendar.
