Wahlstedt is shaped by its location right beside the Segeberger Forest, opportunities for cycling and hiking, and several historical themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Wahlstedt, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay: Would you like to explore outdoor trails, learn about the history of the naval artillery arsenal, or discover village life and crafts? The local sites and attractions offer practical guidance.

Forest, hikes and cycling routes

Wahlstedt lies right next to the Segeberger Forest, the second-largest contiguous forest area in Schleswig-Holstein. There are designated hiking routes and numerous cycling routes in Wahlstedt. The latter are suitable for beginners and advanced cyclists alike. The Mönchsweg passes through Wahlstedt along the Trappenkamp–Wahlstedt–Bad Segeberg section. This gives you different options for planning your tours: a route with a designated difficulty level or a specific, named section of the Mönchsweg.

A cycling map showing routes around Wahlstedt and the neighboring region is available at Wahlstedt Town Hall, the Bad Segeberg Tourist Information Office, and Trappenkamp Town Hall. Before setting out, check whether the map is available at your preferred collection point. You should also take current route conditions into account when planning.

Naval artillery arsenal: history trail and documentation center

The naval artillery arsenal history trail is about three kilometers long and includes twelve information stations. It is open to the public. If you would like to explore the subject along the way, the trail offers a route with a historical focus provided by its stations.

The Wahlstedt Naval Artillery Arsenal Information and Documentation Center is housed in the arsenal’s former waterworks bunker. Several permanent exhibitions occupy around 200 square meters; their content may change. Visits to the center require advance registration with VHS Wahlstedt. Take the RB 82 to Wahlstedt station; from there, it is about a 15-minute walk to the center. Check the timetable and register before your trip. Keep in mind that the two sites have different access requirements: the history trail is open to the public, while the center requires registration.

Village life, crafts and local history

The local history and crafts museum showcases village life and old workshops from 1850 to 1930. A model of the naval arsenal explains Wahlstedt’s early industrial development. While the history trail explores the arsenal as the subject of a walking route, the museum model places the naval arsenal in the context of the town’s development. This lets you discover Wahlstedt’s history from different perspectives: along the trail’s stations and through the subjects presented in the museum.

Another place with a different character is the Christ Church. It has a Bible garden and a memorial where visitors can pause for reflection.
