St. Laurentius and Hoffnung windmill represent architectural and technological history; hiking and cycling routes, as well as the beach at Bockholmwik, offer different attractions. This lets you tailor your choices to the places and activities you want to define your stay.

St. Laurentius: Romanesque granite-block church

St. Laurentius in Munkbrarup was built between 1175 and 1200 as a Romanesque granite-block church. The richly decorated south portal has three columns on each of its stepped door jambs. The arrangement of the columns gives the portal a clearly structured appearance. The church interior includes a granite baptismal font dating from around 1200. It is considered the oldest and most valuable work of art at St. Laurentius. The construction period and furnishings thus provide two specific historical points of interest: the Romanesque church and the baptismal font, which dates from around 1200.

Hoffnung windmill: Technology and summer programme

The historic mechanism used to turn the cap of Hoffnung windmill into the wind has been preserved. Inside, three milling mechanisms and a groat stone are preserved. The cap’s orientation and the milling technology represent different technical aspects of the windmill. Readings and exhibitions are held there in summer; as the programme is seasonal, check the current dates in advance. The windmill also offers guided tours about the mill, the people who live locally and the surrounding area. Check the date and format of a guided tour before visiting.

Hiking and cycling

The stated lengths of the northern and southern hiking routes differ by three kilometres: the northern route is four kilometres long, and the southern route is seven kilometres. The southern route passes historical markers and the village pond. The eastern route offers viewpoints and a shelter in the Autal valley. The routes described can therefore be distinguished by their distance or by the landmarks mentioned along the way. There are four cycling routes, with approximate lengths ranging from 20 to 28.5 kilometres.

The beaches and forests in Munkbrarup also invite you to take walks into the neighbouring communities of GlĂĽcksburg and Langballigau. These paths complement the local hiking routes with a different focus: looking beyond Munkbrarup to the neighbouring communities.

Bockholmwik on the Flensburg Fjord

A sandy beach on the Flensburg Fjord lies in Bockholmwik, a district of Munkbrarup. Surfing is possible from there when wind conditions are suitable. If you plan to surf, check the wind, local conditions and access in advance. A campsite and parking are located near the bathing area; facilities and parking rules may change. Dogs are welcome on the dog beach, although local beach rules may also change. Check the latest information on camping, parking and beach rules before your visit.

Schleswig-Flensburg as the wider region

The wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers additional cultural, historical and landscape-related themes. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species.

Geltinger Birk also offers a distinct nature-focused attraction in Schleswig-Flensburg district: at 773 hectares, it is the district’s largest nature reserve. It has well-maintained paths and guided walks that share information about the flora and fauna. These regional destinations broaden the focus beyond Munkbrarup’s local themes of churches, windmills, hiking and beaches.
