Klein Rheide: Landscape, Cycling Routes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Klein Rheide
Klein Rheide combines a landscape of Geest and lowlands with historic paths and cultural monuments. The area's damp meadows and pastures provide a habitat for rare species, including the northern lapwing. For travelers who want to focus on rural scenery and history, both the river landscape and the routes that pass through the village offer a sense of direction.
Historic Trails Through Klein Rheide
The historic Ox Road (Ochsenweg) runs through Klein Rheide and offers impressions of the area's natural surroundings and cultural history. The Viking-Frisian Way also passes through the village. It connects St. Peter-Ording with Maasholm and has historic links to the Vikings and Frisians. The two routes thus offer different perspectives: the Ox Road is directly connected with Klein Rheide, while the Viking-Frisian Way places the village on a longer route between two named endpoints.
Cycling in the Eider-Treene-Sorge Network
Klein Rheide is connected to the Eider-Treene-Sorge cycling network. The 240-kilometer route runs through the lowland landscape of Schleswig-Holstein and is described as signposted, separated from motor traffic, and family-friendly. Check the signage and conditions locally. Klein Rheide itself has no purpose-built cycling paths. When planning a tour, do not confuse the regional connection with purpose-built cycling paths within the village itself.
The Rheider Au and River Landscape
The Rheider Au flows north of Klein Rheide. It is a tributary of the Treene and part of the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. Together with the damp meadows and pastures, it illustrates different aspects of the surrounding area: the Rheider Au provides a point of reference for the river landscape, while the grasslands offer a habitat for species such as the northern lapwing. The landscape and its natural features are therefore as much a part of the village's character as its historic routes.
Cultural Monuments and the Danevirke
Klein Rheide has two cultural monuments: a thatched-roof house on Untere Dorfstraße, built in 1872, and a double oak dating from 1898 at the intersection of Untere and Obere Dorfstraße. One is a building, the other a tree; together, they represent different forms of local cultural heritage.
A larger point of historic interest is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Archaeological Border Complex of Haithabu and the Danevirke, considered a visitor attraction near Klein Rheide. The Danevirke includes earth ramparts with defensive ditches, a brick wall, two fortifications, and a sea barrier. Alongside the village's cultural monuments, these remains of a more extensive historic complex are another consideration when planning a trip. In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination, more than 25 kilometers of the Danevirke rampart still survive today; this scale sets the complex apart from the two cultural monuments in Klein Rheide.
