Jerrishoe can be explored through several specific topics: its local history dates back to 1196, a nature conservation project brings together trees and open spaces, and Hof Neue Erde combines a farm shop with a bakery. Other highlights include the 43-kilometre-long Große Binnenlandtour, the nearby TreeneRundtour and the seasonal opportunity to canoe on the Treene. The topics differ in scale and character—from an interpretation of the name to the design of a habitat, as well as regional trails and products.

Local history and the name

Jerrishoe has roots dating back to 1196. One explanation connects the place name with the personal name Jerrik and “hoe,” meaning hill. Another local interpretation links it to iron extraction from bog iron ore, which was carried out in the region for centuries. The two explanations emphasise different aspects: one describes how the word was formed, while the other points to an activity in the region. Together, they take you from the linguistic form of the name to the region’s history of land use, without treating the alternative interpretation as equivalent to the explanation of how the word was formed.

Tree clusters and open spaces

The site in Jerrishoe, described in April 2026, comprises 25 tree clusters, each measuring approximately 20 by 20 metres. Pastureland remains between the clusters of trees and shrubs. The mix of trees and open spaces creates sunny, sheltered spots as well as cooler, shady areas. The project is intended to encourage native flowering plants and provide food for wild bees, butterflies, hoverflies and bumblebees. These habitat benefits may increase as the project develops. The areas of trees and shrubs sit alongside the pastureland; both the sunny and shady areas described are part of this mixed landscape.

Farm shop and bakery at Hof Neue Erde

Hof Neue Erde sells grain and potatoes mainly through its farm shop. The range also includes fruit, vegetables, potatoes, baked goods, eggs, spices and animal feed. The bakery produces bread, rolls and other baked goods three times a week. As the range and business operations may change, check what is available and the baking days before planning a purchase. This will help you plan a visit to the farm shop according to whether you are mainly looking for agricultural products or freshly baked goods.

Routes and canoeing on the Treene

The 43-kilometre-long GroĂźe Binnenlandtour passes through Jerrishoe. Its landscape is characterised by a dense network of hedgerows and small villages; most of the route runs along quiet roads and farm tracks. The nearby TreeneRundtour follows extensive woodland, meadows, fields and the Treene. The two routes therefore offer different landscape impressions: the GroĂźe Binnenlandtour is characterised by hedgerows and villages, while the TreeneRundtour takes in woodland, grassland, fields and river. Canoeing on the Treene is possible during the summer half of the year, starting from the Langstedt launch point. When planning, you can compare a route with a stated distance and landscape character with a seasonal activity on the water. Check whether canoeing is available before your trip.
