Grödersby: Marina, Fields and Hedgerows

Grödersby is known for its rural character. Green fields and traditional hedgerows are part of the landscape around the Grödersbyer Noor; the area’s former agricultural character is also part of what makes the place distinctive. The marina in the Arnisser Noor adds another local feature.

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers more natural and cultural landscapes. In Schlei Nature Park, gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing coves are all part of the scenery. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. More than 130 bird species can be observed on the Holnis peninsula, including around 65 breeding species. Holnis is also the northernmost point of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape.

The Geltinger Birk is another nature attraction in Schleswig-Flensburg. Covering 773 hectares in total, it is the district’s largest nature reserve. Well-maintained paths and guided walks, which share information about the local flora and fauna, offer practical ways to enjoy a stay in nature.

For cyclists, the 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn is a circular cycling route around the central part of the Schlei; it starts in Arnis. Guided nature tours are also offered in Schlei Nature Park. The Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also cross the landscape. The history of Schleswig-Flensburg includes Haithabu and the Danewerk, which have jointly been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danewerk rampart remain. In Idstedt, the historic memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt.

Film history is another regional connection: from 1986 to 2012, Kappeln served as a filming location for the television series »Der Landarzt« under the name »Deekelsen«. Arnis and the Schlei were filming locations for a German adaptation of »Fünf Freunde«.
