Geltorf lies in the natural region of the HĂĽttener and Duvenstedt Hills and on the edge of the Schleswig Geest. A watershed runs through the municipality, while waterways and archaeological finds help shape its character. If you are looking for a hotel in Geltorf, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on the landscape, the E1, or history.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

One road route to Geltorf leads from the Schleswig/Jagel exit on the A7 via the B77 toward Schleswig, then continues via Selk toward Fleckeby/Eckernförde. County Road 1 connects Geltorf with Selk. Before setting off, it is worth checking the latest traffic conditions.

Natural Landscape and Waterways

More precisely, Geltorf lies between the southern terminal moraines of the Schlei basin and the western terminal moraines of the HĂĽttener Hills. A watershed runs through the municipality. The Geltorf Au flows into the Selk Mill Au, then through Selk Noor and Haddeby Noor to the Schlei and onward to the Baltic Sea.

South of the watershed, waterways flow via the Boklund Au, MĂĽhlenbach, and Neue Sorge into the Eider and eventually the North Sea. The drainage routes can therefore be distinguished by their destinations: the Geltorf Au flows to the Baltic Sea, while the southern waterways flow via the Eider to the North Sea. An Au in the western part of the municipality is a habitat for the rare kingfisher.

Archaeological Finds and Building History

Two gold bracteates found in Geltorf were grave goods in urn burials at burial grounds dating from the first centuries of the Common Era. Gold ornaments discovered in 1876 point to early settlement in the Geltorf landscape. The year 1876 is the year the ornaments were found, not their date.

Another historic feature is the residential and agricultural building at DorfstraĂźe 19. It is dated to around 1860 and is listed in the register of historic monuments as of September 29, 2025. The date of around 1860 refers to the building and should not be confused with the year the gold ornaments were found. Together, the archaeological finds and a specifically identified building represent different aspects of local history.

The E1 near Geltorf and on the Schleswig–Brekendorf Stage

The E1 runs from Selk via Altmühl and passes the edge of Geltorf. On the Schleswig–Brekendorf stage, the trail crosses a narrow connection between Haddeby Noor and Selk Noor on a wooden bridge. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest information before planning a hike.

Schleswig-Flensburg in a Wider Context

In the wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, Haithabu and the Danewerk have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometers of the Danewerk rampart still remain. These historic sites add a regional context within Schleswig-Flensburg district to Geltorf’s own history of archaeological finds.
