If you are looking for a hotel in Brekendorf, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip. The village is part of Hüttener Berge Nature Park; its landscape, cycling routes and traces of history offer different themes to consider when planning. You can weigh up whether you mainly want to experience nature, go on a tour or explore the village’s history.

Landscape of woodland, moorland and lakes

Brekendorf’s landscape ranges from 10 to 106 metres above sea level and was largely shaped by the last ice age. To the east, 400 hectares of wooded hills form part of a landscape conservation area. To the west, 120 hectares of moorland shape the scenery. Woodland slopes and moorland give the village distinct landscape features. Brekendorf Forest also lies in the terminal moraines of the Hüttener Berge.

Heidberg is protected as a natural monument and features rare vegetation, including juniper. In clear weather, the view from there stretches across fields, lakes and forests. This brings together two sides of the area: protected nature at Heidberg and a viewpoint that is especially rewarding when visibility is clear.

Rammsee is a kettle lake formed by blocks of ice during the ice age. Woodland rises along its shores; water lilies and reeds grow in the lake. A footbridge with a small platform has been built at Rammsee to protect sensitive shore flora and fauna. The facility is maintained locally; when visiting, follow the latest local notices.

Exploring on foot and by bike

A local trail starts at Rammsee, runs through Brekendorf Forest and reaches Heidberg. This creates a clear sequence linking the lake, forest and viewpoint. For planning purposes, this offers a different way to explore than visiting a single viewpoint or spending time by the water: the trail connects several landscape features. Check local access conditions before setting out.

A signposted 15-kilometre mountain bike route is available in Brekendorf Forest. The HĂĽtti-Trail also has marked optional loops and shortcuts that rejoin the main course. These details offer different ways to plan your ride: the mountain bike route has a specified distance, while the HĂĽtti-Trail offers a choice of the main course, loops and shortcuts. As route infrastructure can change, check the current signage before setting off.

Historical traces and local business

The remains of a motte are still clearly visible in the landscape near Brekendorf. The history of transport is also part of the village’s past: Brekendorf was the penultimate station on the former narrow-gauge railway between Eckernförde and Owschlag. This historical context adds to the picture of the landscape without conflating natural and local history.

Biohof Schröder offers regional vegetables as well as organic Bioland Angus beef and pork, including meat from Bunte Bentheimer pigs. The farm sells directly from the farm and welcomes interested visitors. This means you can also include a working farm in your travel plans, alongside the landscape and history.
