Swimming, Hiking and Bistensee

The swimming area at Bistensee invites you to relax and swim. The lake’s surface area is approximately 1.54 km². For planning your trip, this offers two distinct options: a stay at the swimming area and a walk along the circular hiking trail. Check the swimming conditions on site before planning your visit to the water. The swimming area provides a clear focal point for a relaxing stay by the water, while the circular hiking trail offers a route that takes in Bistensee and the lakeshore.

Along the Lake and Through Bistensee

The Bistensee circular hiking trail passes through Bistensee and later runs directly along the lake. This stretch of shore has several quiet spots and swimming areas. The hike therefore combines a route through Bistensee with time by the lake, offering a different way to experience the area than a single visit to the swimming area. The trail also passes a historic draw well with a lifting mechanism, a local attraction. A draw well is used to bring water up with a device, giving the hike an additional historical connection. Trail conditions can change seasonally, so plan your walk around the current conditions.

Glacial Landscape and Reed Belt

The lake’s formation can also be understood in the context of the surrounding landscape. Bistensee formed during the Weichselian Ice Age. As the glacier retreated, it shaped the valley as it is today and left behind moraine landscapes. The valley and moraines are therefore part of the outcome of this geological development, adding the forms of the surrounding landscape to the lake’s story of formation. A distinctive reed belt provides shelter for many birds during the breeding season. Alongside the lake and trail, the protective role of the reed belt during the breeding season is another part of Bistensee’s natural character.

Fishing and Your Own Watercraft

A valid official fishing licence is required to fish in Bistensee from the shore or from safe boats. Fishing permits for Bistensee are available from Torsten Jarck at the campsite in Bistensee. Check before your visit whether the issuing office is currently open. Boating on Bistensee is permitted year-round unless the lake is frozen; weather and safety restrictions still apply. Use of your own boat, sailboat, surfboard or kayak must be agreed on a case-by-case basis with the responsible authority. Make the necessary arrangements in advance if you plan to use any of these watercraft. Fishing and using your own boat therefore require different arrangements: fishing requires a fishing licence, while use of the personal watercraft listed above requires individual approval.

A Historical Connection to Agriculture

The agricultural history adds another layer of time to the perspective of the Ice Age. Bright Lake Ranch is located on the oldest agricultural farmstead in Ahlefeld-Bistensee. Records relating to this farmstead date back to the end of the Middle Ages. This means that the historical connection in Ahlefeld-Bistensee reaches far beyond the formation of the lake and also points to the long history of a specific farmstead.
