Discover Neumünster: Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Neumünster
Neumünster lies in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein and offers a range of reasons to visit: textile history and contemporary art, nature at Dosenmoor, activities at Einfelder See, the zoo and events. Neumünster is considered a central transport hub in northern Germany; rail lines from Hamburg to Kiel and Flensburg pass through the city. It is also considered a base for day trips: the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, major attractions in Schleswig-Holstein and central Hamburg are described as being reachable within an hour at most.
Art and Textile History
The Tuch + Technik Museum presents 2,000 years of textile history. You can try out some of the exhibits yourself, adding a hands-on experience to your understanding of the subject. Villa Wachholtz hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary painting, graphic art, photography, sculpture and video art. There is also a bistro café with a garden terrace. This gives you a choice of distinct cultural highlights: textile history and changing contemporary art. In the wider destination of Neumünster, Vicelin Church adds classical architecture to the art scene. Christian Frederik Hansen, Copenhagen’s chief building director, designed the Protestant church, which was built from 1829 to 1834. This adds a historic architectural point of interest alongside the changing exhibitions at Villa Wachholtz.
Moorland, Trails and Lake
Dosenmoor Nature Reserve is considered the largest and best-preserved raised bog in Schleswig-Holstein. It covers 521 hectares and has retained its original extent in full. Circular trails and benches, as well as an educational trail on a boardwalk, are located in the northern part. If you are interested in these paths, the educational trail is therefore in the same northern area, and its route runs along the boardwalk.
At Einfelder See, an eight-kilometre circular route is available for walking, jogging, Nordic walking and cycling. The beach on the eastern shore offers swimming and beach volleyball. The stated distance makes the loop easy to plan, while the beach offers a distinct range of activities. In the wider destination of Neumünster, the 47-kilometre Nord circular cycling tour starts and ends in the area. It passes through Einfeld, Bordesholm, Bissee, Groß Buchwald, Negenharrie, Großharrie and Tasdorf. Its length and route distinguish it from the eight-kilometre loop around Einfelder See.
Zoo and Events
Neumünster Zoo is set on 24 hectares of woodland and is home to more than 700 animals from around 85 species. The paths between the enclosures are suitable for wheelchair users, and there is also a large adventure playground. Professionally guided tours, themed programmes and workshops explore animals, nature and species conservation.
Holstenhallen offers up to 14,000 square metres of connected usable and exhibition space. International equestrian events and NordBau are held there. If your trip depends on a specific date, check the event dates before finalising your stay.
