Discover Sankt Jürgen: Gardens, Nature and History
Accommodation in Sankt Jürgen
Sankt Jürgen brings together traces of history, horticulture and landscape. St. Jürgen Chapel, the school garden in the district and the Wakenitz with its floodplains each offer something different. If you are looking for a hotel in Sankt Jürgen, you can plan your stay around the themes that interest you: architectural history, plant diversity, nature, or educational activities relating to agriculture and the environment.
Landscape and Activities
The Lübeck district of St. Jürgen stretches south through a broad green belt of fields and meadows into the Lauenburg countryside. To the east, it is bordered by the Wakenitz, whose floodplains form a rich nature reserve. The Drägerweg is part of the well-developed network of hiking and cycling trails in the Wakenitz and Falkenhusen Landscape Conservation Area. In the same conservation area, you can also go boating and fishing. When planning your trip, the type of activity can therefore help you decide: the network of hiking and cycling trails is one option, while boating and fishing on the water are others.
School Garden: Plant Diversity and Learning
The school garden in Lübeck’s St. Jürgen district features around 2,000 different plant species and has officially been designated a garden monument since 2017. It is also used for educational purposes: school classes can grow their own vegetables there. Botanical diversity, monument status and hands-on learning thus come together. If you are interested in horticulture or education, these aspects offer different ways to explore your interests.
The History of St. Jürgen Chapel
The history of St. Jürgen Chapel can be traced through two construction phases. The old chapel was demolished in 1629; the present chapel was built in 1646 at its current location on Ratzeburger Allee. The dates refer to different buildings: 1629 marks the end of the predecessor building, while 1646 marks the construction of the present chapel. It is the oldest church building in its parish. A gravestone dating from 1391 now serves as the altar’s top slab. The stone is therefore much older than the present building and also has a specific function at the altar.
Activities at Ringstedtenhof
At Ringstedtenhof, activities are aimed at adults, teachers, families and groups. Topics include agriculture, where food comes from, and nature and the environment. Children aged three and over can experience a farm’s plants and animals firsthand during farm tours. The topic of food origins provides an accessible link to agriculture by drawing attention to where food comes from. For trip planning, there are options to suit different interests: a farm tour offering children a direct experience of nature, and themed activities for the groups mentioned above.
Swimming in Lübeck
A municipal announcement about the 2026 swimming season described the Falkenwiese natural swimming pool as a place to enjoy swimming in a natural setting in the heart of Lübeck. If you plan to go swimming, check the current season dates in advance.
