Möhnsen lies on the edge of Sachsenwald Forest and can be reached via the A24 Hamburg–Berlin motorway. Its local history includes its first documented mention in 1278, its affiliation with the Basthorst parish until 1319, and an archaeological site by a village pond. A winter cycling tour leads through the surrounding area. This gives you concrete topics for planning your trip: getting there, history, and cycling.

Getting there via the A24

Möhnsen is directly accessible via the A24 Hamburg–Berlin motorway, using the Grande/Schwarzenbek exit. If you are arriving by car, you can use this exit as a reference point when planning your route. Check road conditions before setting off. This gives you a clear reference for getting there before deciding to visit the village.

Sachsenwald Forest and the wider region

Möhnsen lies on the edge of Sachsenwald Forest. In the wider Herzogtum Lauenburg destination, the landscape offers a broader perspective: 26 percent of the district is forested and it includes 48 lakes. Sachsenwald, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest contiguous forest, is also located in the district. This gives you two scales to consider when planning your trip: Möhnsen’s specific location on the edge of Sachsenwald Forest and the broader landscape of Herzogtum Lauenburg.

Local history and archaeological finds

Möhnsen was first mentioned in a written document in 1278. By 1319 at the latest, the village belonged to the Basthorst parish, which also included a chapel. These details place Möhnsen within the history of medieval settlement and the church. A different time scale is reflected in the archaeological site by a village pond, where urns and other artifacts were found. The urns were estimated to be about 2,000 to 2,200 years old; locally, the site was interpreted as a place of sacrifice. The estimated date of the urns is therefore considerably earlier than Möhnsen’s first written mention.

The wider Herzogtum Lauenburg destination has four signposted cycling routes in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park. Visitors can also hike, cycle, canoe, and swim in forest lakes in the same nature park; there are also hiking trails, observation towers, nature trails, and places to rest. The winter cycling tour around Möhnsen and the four signposted cycling routes in the nature park represent two different scales of trip planning: one focuses on the area around the village, the others on the nature park.

Nature watching in Herzogtum Lauenburg

The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park in the wider Herzogtum Lauenburg destination covers an area approximately 35 by 17 kilometers in size. It provides a habitat for kingfishers, white-tailed eagles, and cranes, among other species. Visitors can watch waterbirds from the observation tower at Lake Mechow; with a little luck, they may also spot a white-tailed eagle there.
