Offenbüttel is shaped above all by the Offenbütteler Moor, the Kiel Canal Cycling Route, and activities such as moorland tours and carriage rides. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these features can help you plan your day: the cycling route passes through the village, while moorland activities have their own timing and seasonal conditions. Thode's farm café is a pleasant stop to round off your outing.

The Offenbütteler Moor: Landscape and Rewetting

The Offenbütteler Moor is a former raised bog covering around 400 hectares. It is bounded by the Gieselau and the Kiel Canal. Since 2013, former grassland areas and areas acquired for nature conservation have been undergoing intensive rewetting. Two platforms were built as part of the restoration work.

Rewetting has created habitats for specialized bog plants and animals. These plants include peat mosses, bog arum, and cotton grass. The rewetted areas provide habitats for bird species such as cranes, snipes, skylarks, meadow pipits, whinchats, and stonechats. The moorland is thus both a landscape undergoing long-term change and a collection of specific habitats for characteristic plants and animals.

Cycling and Trails Along the Kiel Canal

The Kiel Canal Cycling Route passes directly through Offenbüttel. A circular route runs from Albersdorf via the Offenbütteler Moor and Schafstedt, then back to Albersdorf. The route descriptions offer two different options: a route through the village and a loop starting and ending in Albersdorf. Check current route conditions before setting off.

Further along the Kiel Canal, service roads beside the canal can be used for cycling, walking, hiking, and horse riding. A signposted diversion from the canal route runs through Offenbüttel, Dammsknöll, the pumping station, and the Gieselau Canal. In the wider Dithmarschen travel region, the Amt Mitteldithmarschen also provides three ready-made cycling tours that you can follow on your smartphone using GPS.

Moorland Tours and Carriage Rides

Moorland tours last around three hours. The carriage and walking excursion includes a guided explanation of the moorland and a short walk into it. A carriage ride is another way to explore the moorland; rides are regularly offered in summer, but availability may vary by season. Before you travel, check whether your preferred activity is currently available.

A carriage ride begins with coffee together at Thode's farm café. Guests on the moorland excursion also receive culinary treats made with local wild herbs. The café serves homemade tarts and cakes, as well as ice cream sundaes, cream puffs, and waffles. The farm therefore adds two specific elements to the outing: a shared coffee to start and a selection of sweet treats.

More Impressions of Dithmarschen

If you also explore the wider Dithmarschen travel region, the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf offers a focus on local history. The museum takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the farmers' republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers a different experience, with hands-on activities including flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewelry, fire making, and baking bread. Activities on offer may vary depending on the program.
