For a stay in Lichtenhain, three main points of interest stand out: the history of the church, the Flower Festival and the Lichtenhain Waterfall, with its railway and hiking connections. The church and festival offer insights into cultural history; at the waterfall, the historic railway, trailheads and a circular route provide practical starting points for planning. Together, they reveal different sides of the destination.

Church and Local Tradition

The earliest reliable record of a church in Lichtenhain dates from around 1346. The church acquired its present appearance during a renovation in 1696–1697. The first date marks the earliest reliable record of a church in the village, while the second refers to the renovation that shaped its present appearance; around three and a half centuries lie between them. An altar painting depicts Abraham, who is asked to sacrifice his own son as proof of his faithfulness to God, and an angel who stops him at the last moment. The scene moves from the threatened sacrifice to the angel’s intervention, bringing a religious narrative together in a single image. Alongside the dates in the building’s history, the altar painting is a subject in its own right in the history of the church.

The Lichtenhain Flower Festival has been held in its present form since 1963. It adds a more recent local festival tradition to the history of the church. Thus, different points in time come together in Lichtenhain: the early record of the church, the renovation that gave it its present appearance and the festival in its current form.

Kirnitzschtal Railway and Hiking Connections

Since 1898, the historic Kirnitzschtal Railway has connected Bad Schandau with the Lichtenhain Waterfall. Its eight-kilometre, single-track route ends at the waterfall. Each of its nine stops is a starting point for hikes into the rocky landscape of Saxon Switzerland National Park. The railway serves two different purposes in planning a visit: it connects Bad Schandau with the waterfall and also marks several trailheads along the route. The eight kilometres refer to the railway’s length; for hikes, the stops are the key starting points.

The Waterfall as a Destination

Since the 19th century, the Lichtenhain Waterfall has drawn hikers, nature lovers and visitors seeking relaxation to the valley. It is also one of the few curiosities from the early days of tourism in Saxon Switzerland to have survived to this day. This perspective adds the waterfall’s longer tourism history to the railway connection.

The waterfall is accessible by bus route 241 and the Kirnitzschtal Railway. It is about a three-minute walk from the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall stop. Check the timetables before travelling, as transport information may change seasonally. The Lichtenhain circular route begins and ends at the waterfall. While hikes can start at the nine stops along the railway route, this circular route has the same starting point and destination. The circular route is therefore a separate option alongside the hiking routes starting from the railway stops.
