Rosenthal-Bielatal is a destination for anyone who wants to focus on rocky landscapes, caves and outdoor excursions. In addition to natural attractions, there are hiking trails, local route connections and travel options by train, bus or bicycle. This lets you decide whether a single hike, a multi-day trek or a cycling tour should be the focus of your stay.

Rock formations and caves

The rock formations include the Herkulessäulen, Sachsenstein, Johanniswacht, Kanzelturm and Spannagelturm. The Bennohöhle, Eisloch and 19-metre-deep Schwedenloch caves are also located in the Ottomühle area. The landscape thus offers both striking rock formations and caves, which can be considered different destinations when planning a nature-focused stay.

Hiking and cross-border routes

The cross-border long-distance hiking trail Forststeig passes through the Rosenthal-Bielatal area. There are two bivouac sites within the municipality. If you are planning a multi-day trek, check the trail infrastructure and the rules for the bivouac sites in advance. Both are part of planning your stages and differ from choosing individual rock or cave destinations.

Local routes also connect with the Malerweg and the Elbe Cycle Route, and continue towards the Czech destinations of Ostrov and Tiské stěny. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between local destinations, connections to these well-known trails and routes towards the Czech Republic.

Choosing a route for hiking or cycling

In the wider destination of the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district, the Malerweg is exclusively a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. The Elbe Cycle Route runs for 40 kilometres through Saxon Switzerland. This distinction helps you choose the right connection: you can reach Rosenthal-Bielatal by bicycle from Königstein via the Elbe Cycle Route. From there, the route through the Bielatal continues along the road or on partly asphalted, otherwise well-maintained forest tracks. As trail and forest conditions can change, it is best to check the situation before setting out.

Getting there and finding your way around

You can also travel by public transport: take the S1 suburban train to Königstein or Pirna, then continue to Rosenthal-Bielatal on bus routes 242 or 245. On summer weekends, the cross-border bus service continues as route 217. Check current departure times before your trip, as timetables may change. If you plan to use the cross-border connection, also take the relevant travel day into account.

There is a tourist information office in Bielatal. Visitor parking is available at Labyrinth/Bernhardstein, Reichstein, Schule, Hochofen, Schweizermühle, Ottomühle, Berghof and Zollhäuser. If you are arriving by car, you can plan to use these locations; check parking conditions before setting out, as they may change. The information office in Bielatal and the listed parking areas offer different points of reference for finding your way around the municipality.
