Hermsdorf/Erzgebirge appeals to travelers looking to combine a stay in the Ore Mountains with outdoor activities: an extensive circular hiking trail, other hiking and cycling routes, and winter sports offer a range of options. There is also a farming and local history museum, as well as activities at a local farm. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, start by choosing what you want to focus on: would you like your stay to center on a longer hike, winter sports, or a glimpse of farming and crafts?

Hiking: circular route and other trails

The Große Rundwanderweg Hermsdorf/E. (Hermsdorf/E. Circular Hiking Trail) starts in Neuhermsdorf and leads through Köhlergrund, along the “Tree of the Year” avenue and the Schwerdtweg to the Gimmlitz spring. On the return leg, the route passes the “Schickelshöhe” viewpoint before reaching the starting point. The trail is marked white-green-white and white-yellow-white.

At 17.5 kilometers and rated moderate, this circular route is a long hike. It takes about 4 hours and 50 minutes. Use this approximate duration to plan your day, and treat the hike as a longer activity in its own right. Numerous hiking and cycling routes also run around and through the villages of Hermsdorf/Erzgebirge, including the Kammweg and the international Eisenach–Budapest Cycle Route. Check the conditions on your chosen route before setting out.

Winter sports in the village

Hermsdorf/Erzgebirge has a network of cross-country ski trails, including the popular Bahndammloipe. Whether a trail has been groomed depends on conditions. Take this into account when planning, rather than assuming it will be in a particular condition regardless of the circumstances.

Another winter option is the “Im Richtergrund” ski lift. It is the longest ski lift in the Eastern Ore Mountains and has a fun park for snowboarders and freeskiers. Lift operations are seasonal and may change; check current operating information before making specific plans. This will help you choose a travel period that suits either cross-country skiing or the facilities at the lift.

Farming and local history museum

The farming and local history museum in Hermsdorf showcases the region’s agricultural and craft heritage. Its extensive collection includes equipment for fieldwork, household items and tools. These objects offer a glimpse into how farmers in the mountains made their living. The museum’s focus on fieldwork, home life and crafts adds a cultural dimension to the hiking and winter sports options.

Liebscher Farm and the WeiĂźbach Valley

Liebscher Farm offers horse-drawn carriage rides and sleigh rides. Before your trip, check whether rides are available and how to book. The farm manages around 40 hectares of mountain meadows around the source of the Weißbach. The Weißbach Valley is part of the protected “Obere Wilde Weißeritz” Natura 2000 site.
